Eight out of ten animals on the planet are insects. The number expresses the importance of studying and cataloging these animals, carried out by physician and researcher Octávio Mangabeira Filho and biologist Ítalo Sherlock, from the 1940s to the 1950s, which led to the Mangabeira & Sherlock Entomological Collection with more than 34 specimens of different species of arthropods, mostly insects of medical interest. The cut chosen by the curator of the collection, the professor at Bahiana Artur Gomes Dias Lima, presented at the Bahiana, 12 of the 224 drawers of the collection in the exhibition “Mangabeira & Sherlock Entomological Collection: popularization of science”, which took place on October 7th, at the Cabula Academic Unit, as part of the programming of the XVI Scientific and Cultural Exhibition of Bahiana.
The curator explains that the collection has great relevance to science as it serves as a database that allows the development of strategic research in ecology, biogeography, conservation, taxonomy and systematics. The mission of this collation is to conduct research and promote the training of human resources related to insects and other arthropods of medical interest.
