“There is not one university, but many universities”. With this speech, Professor Paulo Costa Lima began his explanation during the lecture given this Friday, January 31, at the Academic Unit Brotas. The event marked the beginning of the school year of the Psychology course. The course coordinator, Prof. Mônica Daltro, professors and students were present.

The speaker proposed to those present a reflection on the historical construction of the Brazilian university, including the influence of the Portuguese and Indians in the construction of national culture. “The university only exists as a product of knowledge, (...) it is an interpretive and non-reproductive machine,” he stated.

Composer and educator, Prof. Paulo Costa Lima highlighted the movement of homogenization of culture and its effects on health, on the ways of thinking in Psychology and the need to assume an interpretive posture of this culture within the scope of the university. He also referred to the importance of including the university in outreach activities and in actions of a multidisciplinary nature, enabling the discussion on the meaning of university courses for the culture of the city where they operate.
