The professor of the Physiotherapy course Cristiane Dias and the coordinator of the Luciana Bilitário course, together with members of the Cardiovascular and Respiratory Physiotherapy Research Group at Bahiana (GEPFIR), Laura Leonídia and Leina Ormond, and the doctoral student in Medina and Human Health, Maíra Macedo, published the work “Respiratory signs and symptoms, degree of tobacco dependence and level of physical activity in smokers” in Assobrafir Ciência Journals , from the renowned Brazilian Association of Cardiovascular and Respiratory Physiotherapy.

The work was developed at GEPFIR, through the Pulmonary Function and Physical Activity in Smokers Project, and carried out in a low-income community in Salvador, with the aim of identifying the respiratory symptoms in smokers, their level of physical activity and degree of dependence, compared to non-smoking individuals. The work identified that smokers have a high frequency of respiratory symptoms such as coughing, coughing up secretions and “wheezing in the chest” – and the rates are even worse in those who smoke more and for longer. Another interesting finding was that smokers were more physically active, when evaluated by the Quiz International Physical Activity (IPAQ). This was explained by the work performed by smokers with functions, occupations and professions that required a lot of activity.
