Proficiency test

The British Council, England's department of international cultural relations, has partnered with Science without Borders to subsidize two thousand International English Language Testing System (IELTS) tests of English language proficiency for low-income students. The test (which costs R$440) is required by foreign institutions for all international students and the results achieved prove that candidates for university vacancies have sufficient fluency in the language. However, the department informs that registration for the events on January 10th and 12th are sold out.

The IELTS is an English test system used worldwide to test the fluency level of students, created by the British Council in partnership with the University of Cambridge. A huge number of foreign institutions officially use the IELTS results of foreign candidates for vacancies in their courses.

Is there a foreign language proficiency requirement? What foreign language proficiency exams will be accepted?

“The requirement will be made pursuant to an agreement between the agencies (CNPq and CAPES) and the foreign educational institution or partners. Brazilian higher education institutions are being encouraged to offer intensive foreign language courses to potential scholarship candidates who have difficulty in the language used at the host institution. Higher education in some countries such as: Germany, China and Korea is totally or partially carried out in the English language, making it possible for students and researchers who are fluent in English to apply for these countries.

Agreements with partners such as the Britisch Counci will allow offering high quality distance English courses to Brazilian students already accepted in the program. Access to short courses can also be negotiated, as needed. In order to facilitate the arrival of students and researchers from abroad to Brazil, Brazilian embassies and consulates are studying the possibility of promoting Portuguese courses abroad. Local groups will help with the insertion of foreigners, making it easier to overcome the language barrier in these cases. Students who do not reach the minimum score required in the proficiency tests will also be able to take language courses abroad as assessed by CAPES and CNPq”.
