 HPV virus
O Human Papillomavirus, known simply by the acronym HPV, is a virus that affects the genital areas of both men and women, with the sexual route being its main transmission channel. There are over 150 types ofsse HPV viruses identified and cataloged. It is the main cause of cervical cancer and genital warts.
Generally, the person infected with HPV does not present symptoms, being one of the few signs of the infection the presence of warts, papules or spots on the skin and/or mucous membranes. Infected women can present, in addition to warts, vaginal discharge, vulvovaginitis and inflammation of the cervix.
Data
According to the MDS Laboratory, more than 80% of sexually active women will have some HPV infection; it is responsible for more than 99% of cases of cervical cancer; every two minutes a woman dies from this disease; 20 thousand new cases of this type of cancer are identified annually in Brazil; it is the second most common type of cancer among women.
Prevention and treatment
As the main route of transmission occurs through sexual intercourse, the use of condoms is the most effective way to prevent contamination, in addition to vaccination. In the case of women, secondary prevention, that is, early detection, is done through the pap smearu, also known as preventative.
The most common treatments are laser therapy, electrosurgery, cauterization and the use of ointments.
