11 years ago, Maria de Lourdes Pereira Queiroz operated on her breast to remove a cancer. The story, which at that time was a great scare, is now told by her as an example of life that helps many other women who are going through that same situation. A member of the Support Group for Mastectomized Women (GAMA), which operates at Hospital Aristides Maltez, Maria de Lourdes gave her testimony to a group of women who, on the morning of Thursday, October 18, attended the Teaching-Assistential Outpatient Clinic gives Bahiana (ADAB), in Brotas to perform the annual mammogram.

Together, they attended a lecture on breast cancer presented by medical students from Bahiana members of the Bahia League of Mama with the participation of the Professor of Medicine, Dr. César Machado. The speakers drew attention to the importance of self-examination, annual mammography and preventive habits such as maintaining a healthy diet, practicing physical activities, avoiding alcoholism and smoking.

In addition to Maria de Lourdes, the ADAB directors invited the coordinator of GAMA, Maria de Fátima Azevedo Pereira, who presented the group's activities. "We are always making people aware so that they can prevent themselves with self-examination, periodic medical appointments and mammography."

“I had a mastectomy, followed up and today I take dance, theater and yoga classes, all in the group. I can say that I am happy and satisfied”, says Maria de Lourdes. Another member of GAMA, Maria de Jesus Pereira, removed the breast tumor five years ago and shared her experience with ADAB patients. She also spoke of the importance of the support group and says with a smile that “that's where I rebuilt my life”.
