Otto Wucherer's scientific contribution will be the subject of a lecture

Event will take place on August 17th, at FAPESP.

On August 17th, the Academy of Sciences of Bahia receives Dr. Rejâne M. Lira da Silva to speak about "The Contribution of Otto Wucherer to Natural History and to Research on Snakebite in Brazil". The lecture will be at 9 am, at Salão Lazarento, at the headquarters of the Foundation for Research Support of the State of Bahia (Fapesb).

Otto Wucherer
Otto Edward Heinrich Wucherer (1820 - 1873) was born in Porto, Portugal. Son of a German father and a Brazilian mother, he settled in Salvador and became known as the forerunner of Brazilian Helminthology and for being one of the founders of the Escola Tropicalista Bahiana (1865). He was the leader of a group of physicians who wrote one of the most determining chapters in the history of experimental medicine in Brazil.

The doctor and scientist was also the author of the first researches that related zoology, clinic and treatment of accidents caused by snakes in Brazil, being, in fact, the first herpitologist and also the first to register snake bites in the country.

Rejâne M. Lira da Silva is an associate professor at UFBA, bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences (UFBA), with specialization at the Natural History Museum (London). She is a specialist in animal poisons (Instituto Butantam), Master in Public Health (UFBA), Doctor in Medical Sciences (Unicampi), post-doctorate in History of Sciences (University of Lisbon).
