Bahiana is honored in a Special Session at the City Council of Salvador

The excerpt from the poem “The Statutes of Man”, by Thiago de Mello, not only enlivened the speech of the director of Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública, Prof. Dr. Maria Luisa Carvalho Soliani, as defined by the spirit of the entire Special Session held last Thursday night, May 31, at the City Council of Salvador, in honor of the 60th anniversary of the foundation of this educational institution in health.

Presided over by councilor Dr. Sandoval Guimarães, a former student of the School and author of the request for its realization, the ceremony was attended by the former director of Bahiana and current president of the José Silveira Foundation, Dr. Geraldo Leite, the former student and current director of the UFBA School of Medicine, Lorene Louise Silva Pinto, the representative of the Federal Council of Medicine/Bahia and former professor at Bahiana, Jecé Freitas Brandão, of the former student and councilor, Jorge Jambeiro, of the vice-president of the Association Bahiana of Medicine, Robson Freitas de Moura, of the president of CREMEB and former student, Dr. Abelardo de Menezes, of the state secretary of Health, Jorge Solla and of cardiologist Maurício Nunes, on the occasion representing the students and former students of Bahiana. Everyone composed the table and spoke about the meaning of the School for society.

In his speech, Dr. Sandoval Guimarães presented the history of the honored institution and highlighted its relevant contribution to education in the health area for the state of Bahia. “Today's date recalls the honor and glory of medicine. THE Bahiana it is this renowned institution that has guarded its values ​​from the beginning, since its genesis”, declared the councilor who also highlighted the fact that the Bahiana to have trained more than 10 doctors and health professionals in the areas of Biomedicine, Dentistry, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Nursing and Psychology.

even the grayest Tuesdays,

Thus, the words of the poet Thiago de Mello interspersed the history of Bahiana, sensitively narrated by its current director, Dr. Maria Luisa, who, in addition to carefully citing the names of each of the members of the School's founding group, did not fail to highlight illustrious characters such as the first academic secretary, Lourdes Hummel and the oldest employee from the house, Manoel Mauricio Santos Hora, who works at the Bahiana since 1955 and is affectionately called 'Father Véio'.

Article III 
It is decreed that, from this moment on,
there will be sunflowers in every window,
that sunflowers will have the right
to open up into the shadow;
and that the windows must remain, all day,
open to the green where hope grows.


Another good story was also told by former director Prof. Dr. Geraldo Leite, who, in rich detail, described the graduation ceremony of the first Medicine class of the Bahiana. Dr. Geraldo recalled where each flower garland, each detail of ornamentation was carefully placed by the hands of employees led by Lourdes Hummel.

Among the differentials of Bahiana highlighted by Dr. Maria Luisa Carvalho Soliani, the performances of the Teaching-Assistance Outpatient Clinics of Cabula and of Brotas, with thousands of outpatient visits per year; the Candeal program, started in the Sanitary District of Brotas and which today also serves the Cabula - Beiru District, in partnership with the Family Health Units and associations, schools, churches and other institutions in the neighborhoods. The director also highlighted the 40 years of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy courses, professions that have 43 years of regulation.

"Today, we are a School dedicated to health education and we intend to reach a University, also dedicated to health", declared the director about the next years of the Bahiana. And he added: "We can say, without fear of making mistakes or being frivolous, that teaching, research and extension, the famous tripod on which a good school must be based, are increasingly solid in the Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública".

The Foundation's advisor was also present. Bahiana for Science Development, Dr. Álvaro Conde Lemos Filho and the Executive Director of the Council, Prof. Jacques Saidi Salah, the deputy director of Bahiana, Prof. Dr. Ênio Ribeiro Maynard Barreto, the coordinators of the Medicine course, Marta Menezes, Occupational Therapy, Ana Joaquina Mariani Passos, Physiotherapy, Roseny Ferreira, Dentistry, Urbino Tunes, Psychology, Mônica Daltro, Biomedicine, Geraldo Argolo and of Nursing, Maria de Lourdes Freitas Gomes, in addition to students, employees and representatives of state and municipal health units and entities.

And, to end the ceremony, Thiago de Mello once again rocked those present, in the voice of Dr. Maria Luisa:

Article IV

the practice dreamed of by the prophet Isaiah,

the permanent reign of justice and clarity, 
and joy will be a generous banner 
forever unfurled in the soul of the people.

Article VIII  
It is decreed that the greatest pain

Daily bread is allowed
have in man the sign of his sweat.

wearing the white costume.

It is decreed, by definition,
that man is an animal that loves 
and that's why it's beautiful,
much more beautiful than the morning star.
