A true playground was set up in the Patio of Pavilion III of the Academic Unit Brotas, on the morning of Friday, May 11, to welcome mothers of students, mothers of employees and mothers of students. On the occasion, they were able to perform massage sessions, auricular acupuncture, Pilates and self-defense. “It is an important action and a great incentive, because, in addition to having this service, we were able to learn more about the subject. I've done acupuncture, but I didn't know the auricular modality, for example", says Maria das Graças Souza Dantas, mother of the former student at Bahiana and current Graduate Student at the School, Lorena Souza Dantas.

The initiative is part of the health education program, promoted by Bahiana which is aimed at the entire community of the institution, including students, professors, employees and family members.

Curiosities

Pilates
Joseph Pilates was born in the year 1880 in Dusseldorf, Germany. Since childhood, he suffered from asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever. He studied various forms of movement, including Zen yoga, Greek techniques, floor gymnastics, and Greco-Roman wrestling. At 14, he dedicated himself to bodybuilding, even posing for anatomy posters.

In 1912 Pilates decided to go to England where he became a boxer and self-defense coach for the British police force. With World War I, he and other Germans were detained for a year in Lancaster. During this period, he trained in ground gymnastics with his fellow detainees and, with the training, his physical conditioning improved.

Later, Pilates was transferred to Isle Man, where he developed the role of a nurse, caring for people disabled and sick from the war. Upon realizing the inactivity of these individuals bedridden in the hospital, he adapted the beds with springs to facilitate the movement and development of exercises by the patients. From this experience, prototypes of what would become the Pilates Method equipment, used until today, emerge from this experience. After the war he returned to Germany to train the city police of Flamberg. During this period he met Rudolf Von Laban, who incorporated part of the Pilates technique into his teaching method.

In 1926, Joseph Pilates leaves for the United States and opens a studio in New York City, where he receives the attention of the dance community and his technique becomes an integral part of the training of dancers. Great names in dance such as Ruth St. Denis, Ted Shawn, Marta Graham, George Balanchine, Hanya Holme and Jaerome Robbins were students and practiced the Pilates technique.

"The Pilates method is a philosophy. The principles are based on relaxation, breathing, control and precision of movement. The work is aimed at strengthening the abdominal region. However, in Pilates we work on three aspects: mind, body and spirit, what we now call health of being", explains Dr. Aline Mendonça, physiotherapist and director of Active Pilates, responsible for Pilates actions developed during the Mother's Day event at Bahiana.

Dr. Aline explains that "for more sedentary mothers, we start working on breathing, concentration and after these behaviors are interconnected, this mother will better develop her daily activities". She also highlights the great contribution of the Pilates Method in improving posture and reducing energy expenditure.

Ear acupuncture
"Auriculopuncture or auriculotherapy is one of the resources of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) performed in points located in the auditory pavilion, aiming at balancing the flow of energy in the body," explained physiotherapist and acupuncturist Elydia Freire. According to Eastern knowledge, energy flows through channels called meridians, which interconnect the various organs of the body, keeping the organism functioning properly. In the auricular region, there are more than 120 points in each ear where the vast majority of meridians cross.

This is a microsystem with representation of the whole body and its structures. The most widespread image shows the ear as the upside-down fetus, the lobe corresponding to the head. It is customary to use small poppy seeds or permanent needles that are very small and shaped similar to the name popularly called pig's tail.

Elydia explains that the needles are held in place with tape and can stay for three to five days in the ear. "Ear acupuncture is widely used to alleviate pain or aid treatment with systemic acupuncture (traditional, performed in all regions of the body), for its quick effect and the possibility of continuing with stimuli for longer. By association with the image of the fetus is easy to keep the relationship of the ear areas with the human body”.
