Bahiana promotes the biggest event to fight AIDS in Brazil

Brazilian Symposium on Basic Research on HIV/AIDS will discuss vaccines to fight the disease.

Once again innovating in the field of research and extension, the Bahiana from the 1st to the 3rd of September, the 9th edition of the SIMPAIDS - Brazilian Symposium on Basic HIV/AIDS Research, the biggest event of its kind in the country. Brazilian and foreign researchers will gather at the Bahia Othon Palace Hotel to discuss results and presentations of projects, research and studies on the development of HIV/AIDS vaccines, the central theme of this edition.

The event has the support of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES), National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), Foundation for Research Support of the State of Bahia (Fapesb), FIOCRUZ and the Ministry of Health.

“It is essential that this research be streamlined, in order not only to meet the needs of the Brazilian health system, but also to avoid duplication of projects, with a consequent waste of resources”, says the president of the Symposium, Dr. Bernardo Galvão-Castro which, alongside Carlos Brites, Cristina Possas, Dumith Checker Bou-Habib, Inês Dourado, Joana Paixão Monteiro, Luis Carlos Júnior Alcântara, Luis Roberto Castelo Branco, Maria Fernanda Grassi and Mariza Morgado are part of the SIMPAIDS Executive Committee.

In turn, the scientific committee brings professionals from various research institutions, such as Fiocruz, UFBA, UFRJ and USP. As speakers, the program has 13 international guests from Belgium, France, United States, Italy, Portugal and South Africa.

After SIMPAIDS, from September 5-7, the II Brazilian Workshop on HTLV-1 and HIV-1 Sequence Database will be held. All courses are funded by the Ministry of Health's National STD-AIDS and Viral Hepatitis Program.
