Crowded auditorium. Expectations a thousand. Teachers, students, parents and children on standby to hear what the expert on generational conflicts, Eline Kullock, has to say. And she speaks to us as a companion at work, at school, at college. At the invitation of Bahiana, Eline presented the lecture “Living with the different generations” that led participants to reflect on a better coexistence between parents and children, teachers and students, bosses and employees. Different ages, similar issues. How to make yourself understood in this world of so diverse people?
And along this path, teachers, principals and pedagogical coordinators from secondary schools were at the Cabula Academic Unit, on the night of March 31, at the invitation of Bahiana, for a date with Eline. The next day was the time for parents and high school students and freshmen from Bahiana a total of 450 people attended the meeting. And this time the event was broadcast in real time, by Twicam from Bahiana.
In her presentation, which can be considered a “lecture-show-multimedia”, the president of Grupo Foco, one of the largest human resources companies in Brazil, showed what the profile of each generation is like, from veterans to those born before the second world war, even the young people who are now in high school, colleges and even in the job market, the famous “boys” of Generation Y.
Language, clothing, in short, different lifestyles, present in the same environment, be it home, school, work. How to improve respect, communication and, above all, relationships between these people? One of Eline's main pieces of advice: “with a lot of dialogue”.
One of the points pointed out by the speaker as determinants in the construction of what she called the mental model is technology. And talking about technology, in today's world, is talking about the internet, iPhone, I-Pod, I-Pad, SMS, MSN, Facebook, Twitter, Orkut, Sonic etc... As an illustration of the strong influence of these tools, Kullock he presented, among the videos of his presentation, a parody of the film “A Queda”. The video presents, in a comical way, how these new communication tools have invaded work environments, which can also be transported to school, college and social environments.

According to Eline, one of the differences between generations, enhanced by the use of technologies is the learning process. "What we see is that the younger generation learns through intuition, which for older generations occurs through the use of manuals," says Eline, explaining that young people learn techniques and content through trial and error, while older generations seek instructions and information to assimilate the learning. "This intimacy with technology gives a certain power to Generation Y, in relation to individuals from previous generations."
This omnipotence can be harmful “from the moment you (Gen Y) do not identify points to improve and begin to feel perfect. In fact, families begin to ratify this concept by saying 'you're great, you're a marvel. You got seven and passed the grade, so you're a sweetheart,' no questioning, no proper criticism of the kids, because everyone makes mistakes. This family behavior comes, perhaps, from the new family models. Today there are many single, divorced mothers who work outside the home and the market demands a lot from them, so the little time you have with the children is to say yes, because saying no, in the very little time you have with them, breaks up the family. But, from the very little time he has with him always saying yes, it also breaks up the family. Thus, family values are not passed on: that there is a hierarchy there, that the parents have more knowledge, that they are there to help in the formation of this child”, says the president of Grupo Foco.
Another moment that drew laughs from the audience was the presentation of the video that shows a conversation between two kittens that illustrates the new relationship of young people facing hierarchies, technology, the corporate rhythm.
At the end of the two presentations, a space for dialogue was opened and the audience was able to present their doubts, experiences and even advice for building a more harmonious path between people of different generations.
Innovation actions of Bahiana
The invitation to Eline Kullock is another initiative of the Bahiana which has been increasingly innovating its pedagogical process, its relationship with students and society. According to the director of the School, Dr. Maria Luísa Soliani, this innovative process began with the creation, more than ten years ago, of a nucleus of pedagogues at the institution, to serve both students and teachers, helping them with management of the pedagogical process. Furthermore, as the main milestone, Dr. Maria Luísa points to the implementation of the Training Selection Process, in 2009, a pioneering project in Brazil that values the individual with a critical sense and capable of applying the knowledge acquired in the contemporary context. More humanized, the methodology also proposes a reflection on the candidate's career choice, through the application of experiential activities.
This is not Kullock's first visit to Bahiana. She was here last year when she participated in the VI Pedagogical Forum of Bahiana and discussed with the teachers ways to better communicate with students.
