Former PIBIC Junior Fellow of Bahiana wins awards at a Science Fair

With the awards, the 3rd year student gained credentials to represent Brazil in international events.

The 3rd year high school student, Jackson Menezes, won three awards at the 16th edition of the Northeastern Science and Technology Fair (FENECIT), with the project “Implementation of a mini composting plant from recyclable materials”. The Fair took place in Recife (PE), between the 24th and 28th of November 2020. The young man was a scholarship holder of the Scientific Initiation Program (PIBIC Júnior) of the Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública, the Colégio Estadual da Bahia (the Colégio Central) and the Youth Center for Science and Culture (CJCC) in Salvador. With the awards, Jackson Menezes gained credentials to represent Brazil in international events.

Jackson Menezes won three awards: accreditation to present the project at the Youth Science Meeting, Youth Science Meeting, which will take place in Coimbra (Portugal); second place in the field of Agricultural Sciences; in addition to the award by popular vote. Prior to the Fair, the project had been selected to be presented at the Jóvenes Científicos event in Puerto Rico, which is scheduled to take place in 2021, in Puerto Rico.

“I was very grateful for winning the awards. For us, public school students, this award represents the appreciation of public education and the overcoming of challenges”, reveals the former scholarship holder from Bahiana by highlighting how relevant the project was for expanding their knowledge, both scientific and social. “Through the research, it was possible to propose solutions to the issue of waste disposal and the inadequate treatment of waste produced, in addition to exchanging enriching experiences with other public school students”.
