Students, professors and lecturers participated in the XI Medical Internship Seminar at Bahiana, organized by the professor and coordinator of the Medicine course, Dr. Ana Verônica Mascarenhas and by the professor Dr. Dilton Mendonça. The event took place on April 26, from 14:18 pm to XNUMX:XNUMX pm, in Auditoriums I and II of Campus Cabula, and had a large participation of students.

The semesters were divided into two blocks with different schedules to better meet the needs of students. The 9th and 10th semesters were allocated in Auditorium I, the focus for this group was to debate issues related to the mental health of medical students. For the 11th and 12th semesters, ethical, administrative and financial procedures related to professional practice constituted the axis of discussions in Auditorium II.

Class 1: 9th and 10th semesters

The schedule for the 9th and 10th semesters was divided into two panels: “Mental Health and Self-Care for students in the internship and in medical practice”, coordinated by Professor Sandra Lúcia Santos; and “Controversial issues in medical practice: Ethical and legal aspects”, coordinated by Professor Ceuci Nunes.

The debaters were professors André Carvalho, Luiz Queiroz and Dr. Raimundo José Pinheiro. For professor and physician Luiz Queiroz, the theme is important because the medical course has the stigma that it is difficult: “The student brings this idea of suffering to himself, in addition to the family and social pressure that really burdens the student who need to deal with it. The discussion about how to have mental health from the care with diet, exercise, sleep, etc., helps in this issue."

Dr. Ana Verônica was present during the activities of this block and highlighted that the 11th edition of the Medical Internship Seminar, in addition to highlighting themes of ethical aspects in the practice of medicine, brought reflection on the mental health of students who are taking the boarding school: “It's been a very difficult two years, with a dense workload of forty hours a week, that's why we care about the students, as they also need to reconcile other demands inherent to the course itself. Discussing this issue encourages the search for solutions”.

The 9th semester student of Medicine, João Mateus, considers this type of initiative relevant “since it addresses significant issues that are often neglected, as in the case of mental health. Internship is a phase of change, as it is when admission to the hospital occurs. Psychiatric illnesses in students tend to get worse in this context. The event directs us to a healthier path”.

Class 2: 11th and 12th semesters

Students from the 11th and 12th semesters also had two panels in the event's schedule: “Anyway, Doctor! And Now?”, coordinated by the teacher and Dr. Eliana de Paula Santos; and “Ethical dilemmas in medical practice: ethical and legal aspects”, under the coordination of Professor Dilton Mendonça. The speakers Dr. Pedro Bahia, Dr. Orlando Tavren and Dr. Pedro Platon, in addition to the debaters professors Otávio dos Santos, Júlio César Vieira, Eliana de Paula Santos and Dr. Marina May Cedro, who composed the discussion tables.

Professor Dr. Eliana de Paula Santos comments that the Medical Internship Seminar is an opportunity to debate relevant content for the medical category, according to the job market, "so it is always a great pleasure to participate." Eliana also highlights that the presence of experienced and renowned speakers increases student learning.

According to Professor Dilton Mendonça, who was part of the explanation table in Auditorium II, the main objective of this annual action is to bring academics closer to the practical scenario of the profession: “For the group of the fifth year of the course, the focuses are on issues related to medical records , humanization in health and self-care. With the sixth-year group, we discussed situations inherent to the activity itself, such as ways of entering the market and hiring, shift dynamics, relationship with the patient, among others."

Ariel Machado, 11th semester student, positively evaluated the occasion: “Medicine is already a very broad area, however, it is still necessary to understand administrative and legal aspects that are necessary for the exercise of the physician's activities. These are areas that we don't have much contact with. For this reason, it is essential to take advantage of these moments”.
