The morning of March 15th was dedicated to the celebrations related to the 60 years of maternity Tysila Balbino, partner of Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública through the specialization in obstetric nursing. The event was attended by religious representatives and the Health Department of the State of Bahia - SESAB, as well as employees and patients from Tysilla Balbino.

The director of the maternity hospital and coordinator of the specialization in obstetric nursing, Rita Calfa, says that the partnership with the Bahiana was conceived in 2012, when she was invited to write the course project. Thus, the classes were started in 2013, and since then, two classes are offered per year. “The celebration of 60 years of motherhood also marks the beginning of the 13th specialization class. We have an average of 500 obstetric nurses trained by Bahiana from this partnership”.

Rita explains that, each semester, the curriculum is revised, "currently, 40 hours are allocated for the internship in a general outpatient clinic, a sector where high-risk prenatal care is carried out, and another 30 shifts in an obstetric center, in which students do everything from risk-rated reception, including childbirth assistance to accommodation”. It is noteworthy that the entire course is in accordance with the ordinances of the Ministry of Health and the Cofen-Coren system, with this, the internship is supervised and monitored by full-time obstetric nurses.

The director also clarifies that the practices of the specialty in question are traditional in maternity, and Tysilla Balbino is a reference in obstetrics in the state: “Through the internship, the Bahiana provides students with differentiated learning in a recognized health unit. Remembering that we also have a partnership with the public institutions Maternity Albert Sabin, in Cajazeiras and the Marieta de Souza Pereira Normal Birth Center at Mansão do Caminho”.

The Undersecretary of Health of the State Government and neonatologist, Tereza Paim, congratulated the initiative and added that Tysilla Balbino commemorates, on the same occasion, the inauguration of the milk collection station, a great help for newborns. “Maternity is of fundamental importance because it has always been managed in a way that serves education, which contributes to improving the quality of the service. I have already experienced the unity while intern and this experience was enriching”.

Anderson Santos, nurse and vice president of the Regional Nursing Council of Bahia - Coren-BA, was present representing the presidency. He highlights that the unit has 60% of the body of employees composed of technicians and nursing professionals through obstetric nursing.

The nurse and specialization student at the Bahiana, Elaine Sena, points out that the experience in a graduate program at the institution was very fruitful, as “the professionals involved in the course are trained and attentive”. In addition, the student reports that she was a maternity patient for 5 years: “I experienced Tysilla as a patient, when my daughter was born, and later as a student. In both moments, I was very well received”.
