With the theme "The Medicine of the Future: technological innovations and telemedicine and telehealth", the inaugural class of the Introduction to Telemedicine and Telehealth module of 2019.1 of the Technologist in Health Informatics course, distance learning modality of the Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública. The class was given by the institution's adjunct professor, Renato Sabbatini, on the night of January 29, in the Marta Menezes videoconference room, on Campus Brotas, from where it was broadcast live, through webconference, so that students enrolled in the course could follow it remotely.

In addition to the academics of the Health Informatics course, undergraduate students of Medicine and Nursing also participated in the module, as an extension activity. The course coordinator, Prof. Marta Menezes, in addition to collaborators and students attended the class.

Professor Renato Sabbatini highlights the pioneering spirit of Bahiana in being the first higher education institution to offer an entirely distance learning health informatics course: "This makes it possible for people from all over Brazil to take this training, which today is very important for the country, where the demand is very high."

He explains that the module aims to define what telemedicine and telehealth are: "It is a medical or general health practice at a distance, using the internet. It can be a teleconsultation, where the patient can talk directly to a doctor, using the WhatsApp or a specific telemedicine platform".

According to prof. Renato, today, in Brazil, through telemedicine, general practitioners who were in more distant cities could count on a second opinion from a specialist who was in the capital, to assist them in more difficult decisions, from diagnosis to treatment, without the need to transport the patient to the capital, which today is a huge expense for the municipalities. "In addition, there are many people in the capital who would not need to be there, except for emergency care." Sabbatini states that these professional skills will be a requirement of the future: "So it is important that, in their education, they are required to learn these technological innovations."
