“Science, art and health: in the struggle for democracy”. This was the theme of XVIII Scientific and Cultural Exhibition of Bahiana (MCC), which took place on October 3rd and 4th, at Campus Cabula da Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública. The first day of activities featured the V Extension Show, booths, project Bahiana Green, trailer of Bahiana Health, sports and leisure activities and several health and education tents. On the second day, the VIII Researchers Forum of Bahiana and XV Scientific Initiation Journey (PIBIC), as well as workshops and short courses.

The welcome was given by the dean of Bahiana, Dr. Maria Luisa de Carvalho Soliani, who spoke about the relevance of MCC and of addressing democratic issues in the current Brazilian scenario: “It is our main event, in which we show everything we do and produce during the year. In this Show, we have a great diversity of people, we bring together students, teachers, employees, residents of the external community and we exchange experiences and learning. We have music, artistic presentations and lectures. It's a very special day. We are now in the eighteenth edition, reaching the age of majority, and with a very important theme: the fight for democracy, which is what we Brazilians want to make a better country”.

MCC's opening show was the presentation “Desconferencias”, by the theater group Os Insênicos, with artistic direction by Renata Berenstein. The group, made up of patients from the public health system, addressed, through a critical and comic view, issues related to treatments performed on patients who have mental illnesses. The play was based on the life story of the actors themselves and moved the audience.

According to Luiza Ribeiro, coordinator of People Development, talking about democracy at the XVIII Scientific Exhibition of Bahiana and bringing a theme that encompasses science, art and health is because the Bahiana understands that it has to work in an integrated way and for a youth that is open to this dialogue. “We are very excited to see this auditorium full, with almost 300 people, participating in the opening of the MCC and seeing the spectacle of Insênicos, who addressed something common, which is the good of all and humanization. This is the basis for the formation of Bahiana".

Ligia Vilas Bôas, pedagogical advisor of the Institutional Program for Teacher Development (PROIDD) and one of the organizers of the event, explains that the proposal for the edition of the XVIII Scientific Exhibition of Bahiana it was elaborated from a totally collective construction. “The people who are in charge of organizing the event are representing the institution's ideas. The main focus is to fight for health based on SUS principles: universality, equity and solidarity. Without these values, there is no science, health and education. We also envision a democratic and fairer society. MCC seeks to translate these principles.”

According to Carolina Pedroza, dean of the Extension of Bahiana, the event has an educational, scientific and artistic nature, since the Bahiana believes in transdisciplinary training, which involves science, health, politics and culture. “This edition is obviously geared towards the political context in which we are living. Therefore, it is also an incentive for us to fight for democracy. One of the differentials this year is that we work in the popular education tent with themes related to the fight against homophobia, sexism, sexism, and racism, from a perspective of women's empowerment”.

At the end of the morning, there were draws for air tickets for approved works, and the public was led to participate in other academic and cultural activities.
