14th Parish Health Fair Brotas

A Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública promoted, last Saturday (26), the XIV Health Fair in the Parish of Brotas. The event took place at the Community Center, next to the Nossa Senhora de Brotas, and had the participation of the local community, students, teachers and doctors of the Bahiana.

The fair focused on health promotion and disease prevention and offered free services in pediatrics, orthopedics, ophthalmology, gynecology, postural education, health prevention, information on breast and cervical cancer and vaccination. Instructions on toothbrushing and haircutting services were also provided.

The event coordinator, Dr. Eliana de Paula, highlighted the importance of the fair: “it is a very special opportunity for all of us. We have been participating for 14 years, together with the group of volunteers from the Parish of Nossa Senhora de Brotas, of the organization of this fair. This event is in line with the values of the Bahiana. It is a great opportunity, in which our faculty and students see themselves applying their knowledge on a daily basis. But it's not just a technical issue, it's much more a matter of interaction, of interpersonal relationships, of serving the community that gives us so much”.

The collaboration between the Bahiana and the Parish of Brotas in the idealization of this event, a series of benefits for the community are possible, as explained by Paulo Simoni, president of the Centro Social Comunitário: “it is a very big benefit, because there are needy people here who do not have health insurance and, often, they need to book for the SUS”.

The event was attended by many people from the community of Brotas. Many residents have been attending the fair for a long time. Rosa dos Santos, who used the clinical care service, reported her experience: “I think it's very good. I live close by, I attended the parish and every year I participate to do an evaluation”.

One of the themes that was much emphasized at the time was “Women's Health”. Students carried out awareness-raising activities related to the topic. Professor Cristiana Gomes, who teaches a discipline related to women's health, at Bahiana, talks about how preventive medicine needs to be in evidence: “For academics, it is very important to participate and insert themselves in people's reality, promoting the prevention of cervical cancer, breast cancer and many other diseases, such as diabetes and hypertension,” she said.

A very active group at the Health Fair were the doctors from Bahiana who were conducting the consultations. Dr. Luiz Queiroz, coordinator of the Outpatient Clinic, spoke about the impact that a free fair like this has on society: “First, it impacts personally, it strengthens the mentality of the service in us, makes us strengthen the idea that we are here to serve others and, at the same time, it is educational, because the School Bahiana Medicine is a health school and needs to teach our students that service is the most important part of the health area”, he said.

Joilson Barreto, a student of the 1st semester of Medicine, highlighted the aggregating nature of the activity: “As a student of the first semester, I see the fair as an opportunity for us to have the first contact, in this case, with the community itself, with the people themselves. patients”.

Among the employees at the fair, Hospital Humberto Castro Lima (HHCL), a reference in the field of ophthalmology, was also present. Dr. Iram Cerqueira, who was among one of the hospital's representatives, spoke of the relevance of participating in this activity: “The importance of social action, in the sense of ophthalmology, is to draw attention to the health of the eyes. The hospital is a philanthropic institution that works with the SUS, and we have this objective of extending, going beyond borders, and showing, for those who do not know, the quality of the service we provide there, always with a focus on the human being and, most of all, in eye health,” he said.
