“I chose the Bahiana for its approach to health, a more humanized approach and because it is a recognized institution. I liked the event, because we met the coordinators of the courses, we were able to reflect, once again, on the importance of choosing a profession, the importance of taking care of the other and having this as a personal characteristic, because otherwise there is no way for you to follow the health profession, if you don't have this passion to take care of the other”, reports Ana Carolina Araújo, a freshman in Psychology, who was present at Novos da Bahiana 2018.2, and which, this semester, presented the theme "The culture of care: art as a path", on July 26, at Campus Cabula da Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública.

The coordinator of People Development, Luiza Ribeiro, opened the event telling a little of the history of Bahiana, a 66-year-old institution that strives for constant improvement and seeks to transform people through education, so that they can transform their environments.

The meeting was organized by the Psychopedagogical Care Center (NAPP) and was attended by the coordinators of the Medicine courses, Dr. Ana Verônica Mascarenhas Batista, from Biomedicine, prof. Geraldo Argolo, Physical Education, prof. Clárcson Plácido, Physiotherapy, prof. Luciana Bilitário, Dentistry, prof. Urbino Tunes, in Psychology, Prof. Sylvia Barreto and in Nursing, Prof. Simone Cardoso Passos, of which she is acting coordinator.

The coordinators welcomed the new students, spoke about what each course has to offer, the extracurricular projects that the institution makes available to its students and how entering the undergraduate course is the beginning of a cycle full of growth possibilities .

“The freshmen's reception is a unique moment because, as the course coordinators said, it is a moment of renewal, a new generation coming in, which encourages us to be updated. An initiative very well done by the NAPP and programmed by the coordinators”, says Luiza Ribeiro, who highlighted the presence of pillars such as art, joy and information. “This all generates a positive effect for the freshman, which echoes in families. Freshman week is a door that opens in a more definitive way, because, although they have already gone through the selection process, when they sit here and meet people, they feel the atmosphere, and this makes the new journey begin energized. The event reveals, above all, the reception and receptivity that the School Bahiana it has with everyone who arrives here and, mainly, with our students”, he concludes.

Maria Angélica Mendes, coordinator of the NAPP, explains that freshman week at Bahiana it marks the beginning of adult life for many of the institution's new students, “it's when young people begin to take responsibility for their choices and who they want to be. THE Bahiana, when he offers this space, he is very happy. Here, we present the institution's perspective on education. Teachers present the courses, the structure of the grid. What is seen is an alliance that is being formed between students and the institution. This also strengthens the bonds they create throughout the academic period. It is the integration that we want to plant from the beginning”.

The New of Bahiana 2018.2 featured the presentation of the band Cruz e os Credos, formed only by students, who shared their experiences as undergraduates and how art helped them to overcome the challenges encountered in the university journey. The freshman in Medicine, Isabela Duarte, declared how much this moment meant to her: “It's really cool to be here, to have this recognized by the institution, in an event like this, of reception for us and also to realize that all the difficulties of the life, as the boys who introduced themselves said, can be surpassed by art, by a sensitive way of seeing life”, reported the student.

The band's vocalist, Kaio Cruz, who is in the 10th semester of the Medicine course, describes the prestige of participating and collaborating with this meeting: “It's a huge pleasure, because I'm aware of the grandeur of this event. You, on the first day, bring, as a theme, the humanization of health for freshmen. Medical education has a great potential to dehumanize the student, because it removes empathy from him, as we see suffering and death all the time. This causes many disturbances in the student's life. So to get here and talk to freshmen about the importance of keeping humanity inside of you, that's enlightenment,” says the student.

Several projects from Bahiana were introduced to new students during the event, including: the Individualized Care Center, which offers support in the students' daily lives; the Institutional Relationship Nucleus - RELACI which, in addition to being responsible for actions, such as the 'Bahiana for a day', works as an ombudsman for hazing complaints – a practice to which the Bahiana is contrary – complaints can be made anonymously; the Physical Activity, Sport and Leisure Center with a focus on bodily practices, under the coordination of Professor Paulo Rodrigo Santos; the Bahianescer project, carried out with young people from the Mata Escura community and mentioned by Prof. Simone Cardoso Passos; and the Common Nucleus, created to integrate the practices of the other nuclei, which was shown by the professor of the Physiotherapy course Luciana Oliveira.
