II International Meeting of Pediatric Urology

Share

For the first time, in Bahia, the topic Renal and genital alterations in the fetus and newborn was debated internationally. The subject was the focus of II International Meeting of Pediatric Urology performed by Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública that took place on June 16, at the Othon Palace Hotel.

Aimed at medical students, pediatricians, pediatric nephrologists and urologists, the main objective of the meeting was to provide continuing education for students and professionals in the field of pediatric urology.

Coordinated by the pediatric urologist and professor at Bahiana, Dr. Ubirajara Barroso, the event brought as speakers the Dr Larry Baskin (Head of Pediatric Urology at the University of California – San Francisco and President of the 1st World Congress of Pediatric Urology; Dr Anthony Caldamone (Chief Sector of Pediatric Urology at Brown University and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Pediatric Urology); doctor Antonio Macedo Jr. (Head of Pediatric Urology at the Federal University of São Paulo) and doctor Nicanor Macedo(Head of Pediatric Urology at Hospital Jesus-RJ).

According to Dr. Ubirajara Barroso, it is important to discuss topics such as genital changes in the fetus and newborn, as “These changes are quite frequent and pediatricians, urologists, obstetricians and ultrasonographers need to be familiarized with the subject. Renal dilation, for example, is the main alteration found in obstetrical ultrasound and may, in some cases, require surgical treatment after birth”.

To talk about it, the Bahiana invited two of the world's leading experts – Dr. Anthony Caldamore and Dr. Larry Baskin, the first urologist to treat urinary obstruction with fetal surgery (prenatally).

Another controversial topic discussed was the Genital Ambiguity (disorders of sexual differentiation). This is the case of children of a certain sex on the chromosome, but who are born with internal and external genitals corresponding to the opposite sex, or indeterminate. According to Dr. Ubirajara Barroso “innovations on the subject were discussed. Dr. Larry Baskin is one of the world's leading experts on the subject, with numerous relevant publications.”
