Professor Hygia Maria Nunes Guerreiro, from the Biomedicine course at Bahiana, received, in May of this year, the International Teachers Award given by the American Society of Microbiology (ASM) and UNESCO. The delivery took place during a conference held in San Diego, California, USA. The award is intended to encourage the teaching practice of university professors from countries with limited resources. Among the nine awarded, professors from the African, Asian and Latin American continents were chosen.

In addition to the award, the conference promoted the exchange of experiences and enabled members to learn about new teaching methods that actively involve the student, providing a lasting understanding of Microbiology. The idea is to improve the quality of teaching in the subject in their home country.
In addition to offering interactive training to demonstrate how to use ASM resources in building new techniques, the conference enabled teachers to participate in a Forum consisting of plenary sessions, discussions and working groups. Program members also participate, for a one-year period, in a learning community that continues to provide training and assistance after returning to its Institutions.
"The meeting was of great benefit to me, encouraging me to implement new teaching techniques for the subjects I am part of in the Bahiana”, declares professor Hygia. She already has a strategy for disseminating her experience in the US that will include the creation of a virtual community in Portuguese on the website. American Society of Microbiology, for the exchange of teaching experiences.
Its plans also include holding a workshop on exchanging experiences in teaching methodology and a meeting of professors before the Brazilian Congress of Microbiology, with the support of ASM members. On this occasion, she intends to present a work in the form of a poster: Motivational Activites Can Improve College Students' Learning.
