Bahiana holds the VI Meeting of Struggles in Mental Health

The meeting was held last Friday (04) and was attended by professors and students from higher education institutions.

Opening the celebrations of the month of support to mental health, the Psychology course of Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública held, on May 4, at Campus Cabula, the VI Encounter of Struggles in Mental Health, whose theme was portrayed from different academic and professional approaches. The event, free and open to the external public, was attended by professors and students from several higher education institutions.

The main theme of the roundtable was “Training in Mental Health in Times of Uncertainty” and featured guest speakers Milena Lisboa (Bahiana), Ivete Santos (UFBA/Lemos de Brito) and Vládia Jucá (UFBA). The event was coordinated by the professor of the Psychology course at Bahiana, Raphael Fernandes.

     
Psychiatrist Ivete Santos brought the theme “Teaching and Learning as Acts of Transformation”, in which she spoke about her performance with forensic mental health at Lemos Brito Penitentiary and at the academy. “Giving visibility to this area of ​​work is a transforming dimension, so that it is possible to understand how this system influences society”, he declared.

“Micropolitics and territory: extension as a plant for the invention of care devices” was the theme of the speech of the Psychology course professor at Bahiana Milena Lisboa, who discussed the experience with the Youth Care Center (CAJU) of the Bahiana. She opened her participation by reading a manifesto-text, proposing a more critical analysis of the forms of power and their relationship with the sociopolitical context of Brazil, having as reference the author Michel Foucault.
     
The importance of internship experiences in the field of mental health and what are the proposals for changes in this field in the academic area was the focus of the speech of the professor of the Psychology course at UFBA, Vládia Jucá, whose theme was “Internship in Psychology as a Clinical Device- Political. ”

The coordinator of the Psychology course at Bahiana, Sylvia Barreto, highlighted the importance of starting the month with a discussion of this matter, as on May 18th, Anti-Asylum Fight Day is celebrated. “We decided to open the month of May with our Encounter of Struggles in Mental Health, which is already a historic event and part of the Psychology course calendar. The purpose of the event is to be a reflective event, considering what is happening in the political context today. We are going to discuss what training and practices in mental health are like in light of what we are experiencing in the political scenario.”
     
During the opening of the event, the People Development coordinator, prof. ª Luiza Ribeiro, emphasized the concern of the Psychology course at Bahiana in proposing an event focused on mental health. He also stated that “the event celebrates this concern of the Psychology course in Bahiana with the current context of Brazil and the world. A course that is turning 18, the age of majority, and that means a lot. It's been two decades, practically, training professionals who are very committed to caring for the other”.

Students also participated in organizing the event. The 5th semester student in Psychology, Luiza Rodrigues, spoke about how "it is important for students to participate in a meeting like this, in which there are discussions from a perspective of science in a more humanized way".

Specialization in Mental Health and Primary Care
Bahiana has a Specialization in Mental Health and Primary Care, which is coordinated by Prof. Maria Antonieta Nascimento Araújo. “It is a course for all areas and moves in that direction, so that students, former students and professionals from different health areas qualify for assistance in the field of mental health, with prevention and health promotion,” says the coordinator.
