“Today I was able to experience something so beautiful, portrayed by such sensitive hands and, many times, we do not value a person because they are elderly and, being here, shows us how they can do so many things. Seeing how a person at that age portrays, in such a small space, what takes us so far is wonderful”. That's how Patrícia de Souza Veloso, maid of the Bahiana, expressed his feeling when visiting the artistic exhibition of the members of the Grupo Encontro Feliz that took place on November 9, at the Academic Unit Brotas.

Composed of elderly residents of the Sanitary District of Brotas and patients at the Medical Center of Bahiana, Grupo Encontro Feliz has been in existence for about 10 years. It is currently coordinated by the social worker at the Lorena Vaz health unit, in partnership with the Health Integration Program (PIS). Lorena explains that, initially, the elderly are heard about their demands and, later, there is contact with graduate students of the PIS (Health Integration Program) who plan and carry out activities throughout the year with a focus on health promotion, quality of life and well-being.

“The idea for the exhibition came from Joaquim Pedroso, a member of the group and plastic artist. He proposed to organize an art workshop with the elderly to show their work and also show that everyone is capable of producing, making their works, having their autonomy, putting their creativity into practice”. She explains that, in the group, there are also other people who are not plastic artists, but who paint and work with crafts. Thus, two artistic workshops that resulted in the exposure.

For Margarete Costa, 75-year-old daughter of Maria Terezinha Costa de Jesus, her mother's participation in the group is very positive, as it stimulates her productivity. “I think this activity she does with this group is wonderful. It's making her happier, giving her more life and she's becoming more productive. And today what she brought here is very good, because she does it with love. And we children are very happy, because she is having an activity that pleases her”.

Proud of her mother's curriculum, Madalena Rodrigues says that Mrs. Durvaldina Souza Tavares began her studies in painting soon after retiring as an accountant. “In 1999, she took a free painting course in Maceió and was invited to participate in a Navy exhibition, on the anniversary of Companhia dos Portos”. After that, the amateur artist, now 78 years old, has already taken courses in Brasília, in Salvador and keeps her studio at home. “But I don't consider myself professional. I paint as a hobby, because if I were a professional, I would feel obliged to paint. I only paint when I feel like it”, he points out.

Naiane de Oliveira Souza, 5th semester of Psychology, says that, at the beginning, she thought she would not have the patience to deal with the age difference, “but, little by little, I was surprised at myself and realized that it was really cool, that I can have patience, yes, and this experience contributed a lot to my training”. She points out that living with the group helped her to identify some pathologies studied in the classroom, which are very present in people of the Encontro Feliz age group, such as depression. “It's good to see in practice how the symptoms manifest themselves, how people react to these situations and, after we alert them, they start to take care of themselves. It's been wonderful.”
