Share

The night of October 26th was configured as a true gala party at the Cabula Academic Unit of Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública when the 20 years of the First Aid discipline of the Medicine course were celebrated, coordinated by Professor André Zimmermann, physician and Captain of the PMBA Health Board. Today the discipline is made up of a group of 50 monitors who work with teaching, research and extension.

The dean of the Bahiana, Maria Luisa Carvalho Soliani, the vice-rector Ênio Maynard, the coordinator of the Medicine course Ana Verônica Mascarenhas, the dean of Undergraduate and Graduate Education Prof. Maria de Lourdes de Freitas Gomes and the Dean of Extension Prof.ª Maria de Lourdes de Freitas Gomes. and Carolina Pedroza de Carvalho Garcia, the coordinator of People Development Luiza Ribeiro, the former coordinator of the Prof.ª Eliana de Paula Medicine course, in addition to professors, academics, monitors and ex-monitors of the discipline.

The event was also attended by authorities such as Colonel Sérgio Baqueiro, director of the Military Police Education Institute of the State of Bahia, Reserve Colonel Flodoardo Azevedo and Captain João Daniel of the 12th Military Fire Brigade (SALVAR) representing his Commander, Major Rogério Cerqueira.

The ceremony opened with a performance by the string octet of the Castro Alves do Neojiba Orchestra. “Celebrating is remembering together and today we are reliving this 20-year history. Here we remember the master Celso Figueiroa, founder of this discipline that Bahiana offers in a pioneering way, being one of the few in Brazil to continue offering it”, declared the dean of Bahiana, Maria Luisa Soliani stressing the importance of carrying out projects of social relevance”. After the creation of the discipline, in 1997, the First Aid for All Program (PPSPT) was started in 2000, an extension activity linked to the discipline. To date, the program has trained more than seven thousand first responders, having 457 monitors.

Professor André Zimmermann says that, in the beginning, the work was built with the participation of students, professors, headed by Professor Celso Figueroa. “We didn't really know where to start because the bibliography was very scarce, colleges didn't have first aid (currently, in 2017, few colleges do). We were, little by little, with this part of teaching, then we evolved to the extension activities, which is the First Aid for All Program (PPSPT) and we also worked with the research area with the First Aid Study Center (NEPS)" .

Tribute

The First Aid course was created by physician Celso Luiz Santiago Figueroa, at the time a professor at Bahiana, honored at this event (in memorian). The doctor's family also attended the ceremony.

The celebrations were also attended by 120 former first aid monitors, five of whom were the founders of the monitoring: Adson Figueiredo, Marcos Feisal, Verena Schimidt, Ana Maria Marinho and Bruno Sacramento.

"Receiving this honor is very special and exciting, it makes us remember the whole beginning and how monitoring was important not only because in our life as doctors we will come across several episodes, with situations in which we will need to use this knowledge, but also because it helps us to learn to teach, to pass on knowledge”, says Ana Maria Marinho. According to her, having gone through the discipline and being a monitor made a lot of difference in her professional life.

Murilo Tavares, first aid monitor and second semester student of Medicine, explains that it was the realization that led him to seek monitoring. “Monitoring gives all of us the feeling of accomplishment, of being able to help others, which is what I sought in the Medicine course”.

Also honored was the laboratory technician and member of the discipline for 15 years, Ana Meire Pereira. The ceremony ended with a performance “Laço e Abraço”, with the ballet dancer from Teatro Castro Alves, Alice Becker.
