Share

To emphasize the importance of the National Organ and Tissue Donation Day, celebrated on September 27, the students of the Supervised Curricular Internship of the 8th and 9th semester of the Nursing course at Bahiana they took advantage of the date to carry out an action at Hospital Humberto de Castro Lima, accompanied by professor Luana Bomfim.

The action aimed to sensitize patients and hospital visitors, contributing to the dissemination of knowledge about corneal donation and providing guidance on the importance of uptake for patients who are waiting for transplants and need to undergo the procedure.

about the donation

In Brazil, in 2016, there were 14.641 corneal transplants, according to a source from the Ministry of Health. This type of surgery is indicated when there is loss of corneal integrity, in order to improve vision or correct eye defects that endanger the anatomy or the function of the eye. The percentage of surgical success is high in uncomplicated cases and with a good prognosis. A donor can help up to two people to see again, but it is important that there is a dialogue with their family members about their wish, as, by law, this wish can only be fulfilled if their family authorizes the donation after death of the donor.
