The medical students Luiza Lopes de Almeida and Izabela Maria de Brito Marques represented the Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública at the 53rd Brazilian Congress of Tropical Medicine, which took place from August 27th to 30th, in Cuiabá, Mato Grosso.

"Assessment of the epidemiological profile of meningitis in a reference hospital in Bahia. 2007 to 2016" was the theme of Luiza Lopes de Almeida's course conclusion work, which, due to its excellence, was selected to be presented at the congress.

"Initially, this work was developed only to be presented as a course conclusion, however, for me, it became much more than that. I managed to get good results with the research and have the opportunity to actively participate in an event of this size and being able to present to a professional audience that is already part of the area of infectology is very gratifying", celebrates Luiza. She highlights the experience gained, the teachings and guidance received from trained professionals with experience and adds that extension activities like this only add to the student's academic life. "Thanks to Bahiana for the encouragement and partnership, to my advisor Dr. Ceuci Nunes and to professor Dr. Juarez Dias, for all the support given during the construction of the work and in Cuiabá, during the event".

Like Luiza, medical student Izabela Maria de Brito Marques presented her course conclusion paper entitled "Main pathologies of patients admitted to a reference hospital in Salvador-Bahia. 2007-2016", also supervised by Prof. Dr. Ceuci Nunes.

Despite being a Brazilian congress, the event brought together researchers from countries like Australia, Thailand, Guinea-Bissau, the United States and Cuba. Brazil was represented by 26 states, plus the Federal District. The event had a schedule consisting of more than 40 tables, nearly a dozen conferences, in addition to 33 sessions with free themes.
