On August 25th and 26th, the Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública brought together students and nursing professionals at the II Symposium on the Surgical Center and the Material and Sterilization Center, at the Cabula Academic Unit.

'Patient safety and quality of care' was the theme of the event coordinated by the professors of Bahiana Mary Gomes and Alexsandro Tartaglia, sponsored by Spacemed (Commerce and Medical Materials), Galmed (Commercial and Hospital Products LTDA), MTJ (Commerce and Representations) and Esterelize (Sterilization Technology).

Over the two days, the activity brought debates with the participation of renowned professionals and researchers from Hospital Albert Einstein, Hospital Sírio Libanês, INCA and the University of São Paulo, addressing specific themes in the promotion of nursing care aimed at the Surgical Center and Material Center and Sterilization (CME), in addition to the exhibition of posters of works developed by students from Bahiana.

Mary Gomes, who is also coordinator of the Surgical Center specialization course at Bahiana, explains that the symposium is extremely relevant for professionals. "This event, in fact, is like an offshoot of a module of our specialization course and, when we proposed a symposium, we provided opportunities not only for our students but also for the nurses in the service to share experiences together with renowned and reference professionals in the area, present at the event”.

The PhD in Nursing and professor at the University of São Paulo, Kazuko Uchikawa Graziano, emphasizes that the event is a way to socialize nursing professionals and students with current issues in the middle of the surgical center and CME. “A rich activity like this provides motivation for professionals when exchanging information and experiences. I've studied CME my entire life and, bringing a little of my knowledge, it's gratifying”.

“The CME is a growing sector in recent years and we were able to realize the importance of this segment in the health area due to infection control, which is an important factor for the patient and for the hospital area as a whole”, explains Isabel Iamaguti nurse from Hospital Albert Einstein and declares that the event will bring to the area an awakening in relation to the issues discussed.

Luíza Souza, a student of the 6th semester of the Nursing course, says that she will complete the course work on the CME and participate in the symposium was an opportunity to learn more about the subject. "I think it's valid to be in contact with renowned professionals in the area, discussing about the surgical center and CME and the Bahiana it is a school that gives us the opportunity to grow both as academics and future professionals in the field, bringing activities like this”.

Author of several books aimed at Centro Cirúrgico and CME, Prof. João Francisco Possari, a nurse at the São Paulo State Cancer Institute and a PhD in Science from the USP School of Nursing reports that the event is important for disseminating information and knowledge among nursing professionals and academics. “The exchange of knowledge in events like this is very rich and helps to strengthen the profession, also enabling these professionals to be trained to deal with patients”.

Queila Araújo, nurse at Humberto Castro Lima Hospital and graduate student in CME at Bahiana points out that the symposium brought renowned professionals and reference in Brazil and provided a vast exchange of experiences among the participants. “Both for the academic community and for professionals who are active in the area, it is extremely important to participate in events like this one that promote an update of knowledge on such important issues in the field of Nursing”.

Alexsandro Tartaglia, one of the coordinators of the event and professor of the postgraduate course in Surgical Center and Material and Sterilization Center at Bahiana it also highlights the importance of the exchange of experience provided by the symposium. "THE Bahiana, as it is a Health School, it always gives its academics and nursing professionals the opportunity to be in contact with the experiences of excellent hospitals in Brazil through lectures and debates promoted throughout the program”.

“Today, the CME is the central body that moves the hospital and, participating in events like this one, gives us the opportunity to update innovations in the area. Without a structured CME and qualified professionals to carry out the surgical preparation together with the surgeon, health will be very deficient”, concludes Itaigara Memorial's Nursing technician, Itaraci Bernardina dos Santos.
