“Mata Escura is a highly discriminated neighborhood, where there is a huge prevalence of social exclusion, but it is a leading neighborhood in terms of cultural groups. When the proposal to hold the 3rd edition of the fair here was approved, we sought to work together with partnerships and organized social movements, especially the Mata Escura Social Development Forum”, reports the event coordinator and course teacher of Nursing of Bahiana, Prof. Aidê Nunes, who attended the III Health Fair Taking Care is Good, held on August 5, in the neighborhood of Mata Escura.

The action had the partnership of Sine Bahia and support from the Military Police, the Association of Parish Communities of Mata Escura and Calabetão (Acopamec) and the Maria Constância Municipal School, bringing together professors and students from the courses of Nursing, Medicine, Psychology, Physiotherapy, Physical Education and Biomedicine and the community in general, offering spaces for all ages.

The stands of the initiative's partner, Hospital Humberto Castro Lima, were available to the population, promoting information on the main eye diseases and forms of care and prevention of blindness; the project Living with Epilepsy and Mental Health, which addressed the care of patients with epilepsy and mental disorders; the spaces Hora da Criança and Saúde da Mulher e do Men (Women's and Men's Health), with the promotion of health education, in addition to visits to identify hypertension and diabetes.

During the fair, the population had access to Sine Bahia, where services for issuing a work card and social security were offered, the Know to Prevent stand, where medical students discussed diseases such as zica, chikungunya and yellow fever, the 'Bahianescer – Dialogos com a Juventude' stand, which is an outreach program aimed at promoting the inclusion of Nursing, Medicine, Dentistry, Biomedicine, Psychology and Physiotherapy students in the group of adolescents from Mata Escura (Adolescer com Arte) . the activity had the Brechó Chique, with all product sales reverted to Associação HTLvida, an association that supports HTLV carriers, in addition to the Stage das Artes which featured the presentation of the Jucênicos Group from the Hospital Juliano Moreira together with the Adolescer com Arte Group.

According to the coordinator of the Nursing course, Prof. Cristiane Magali, the proposal of the Health Fair Cuidar Faz Bem starts with the training of students in health. “Here we are already in the community, but all the work started five months earlier because the fair is all thought out and organized together with the students. So, it is already educating the new health professional to understand that we cannot do health without being with the community, this is the main concept of the programming”.

The social worker, social educator at Acopamec and resident of Mata Escura Joyce Cristina, who offered a job with turbans to the public, reports that the fair was extremely important to the community. “Offering qualified health services is very valid for our community and the entire fair was a collective construction and we were present in the organization from the beginning. The event is wonderful and the citizens of Mata Escura embraced the Bahiana"

The social educator and resident of Mata Escura Josenilda Souza says that the fair brought a lot of information to the community. “There are people who are at home on Saturdays and sometimes they don't know the meaning of a health fair. So, having access to information about various diseases and forms of prevention is important for us. Thanks to Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública for this initiative”.

Innovative in the 3rd edition of the fair, the Rare Diseases stand brought information about amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, known as ALS and Duchenne syndrome. “The fair brings together professionals from all areas of health and this ends up being of great importance both for us academics and for the community. Through this work, we have a sense of what we are going to face after graduation”, explains Ellen Souza, a student of the 8th semester of Nursing participating in the stand.

Lenilson Bento, a Psychology student, community health agent and creator of Adolescer com Arte, comments that the initiative is valuable, as it ends up bringing health services to the community that the public service cannot offer. “We have a basic health unit here in Mata Escura, but there are some services that are not offered and through the fair the population can have access to these services. A fair like this mobilizes the entire community, benefiting them with quality health services, in addition to the cultural part that was offered to the public.”

The 3rd edition of the fair also featured the Seja Digital stand, which provided information to the population about the change from analogue to digital signal, in addition to providing the fair's public with games and distribution of gifts.
