"Perspectives of Health Policies in the Current Political Context" was the theme of the inaugural class of the Psychology of Bahiana which brought together freshmen and seniors on the morning of last Friday, July 28, at the Academic Unit Brotas.

Mavie Eloy Kruschewsky, former student of the institution and current technician of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation of the Municipal Health Department, was the guest speaker and presented the current situation of Brazilian public policies in light of recent changes adopted by the federal government. In her speech, the psychologist also shared her professional experience with those present, reporting situations experienced in the course of her career.

Mavie recognizes the importance of discussing the political role of the psychologist, especially within the academy. "People who deal with management have already realized how much they need to do this kind of provocation in training, how important it is that these issues are brought to the institution, universities, colleges and that we have political training for these boys ”. She emphasizes that the current political moment calls for more positioning on the part of everyone and how essential it is for psychology students to stay informed about what the country has been going through. “We are at a moment with bad forecasts, we have a decisive moment in 2018 with the elections. So, I really hope that some here will come out touched and start looking for information beyond what they hear in the media, that someone will go to the SUS to have an opinion formed, that someone will understand the process and start to become put politically in some spaces”.

Mavie highlights the critical situation of mental health and highlights the relevance of the participation of psychologists in management roles, influencing governments in the creation of fairer social policies that are more consistent with reality. “There is an urgent need for a position in the psychology category in defense of the achievements that have already taken place in relation to mental health. It is also necessary that we occupy other spaces, especially decision-making spaces, that we are able to influence with our technical knowledge, with our guidelines, with our political position in decision-making”.

For the 9th semester Psychology student Manuela Rocha, discussing issues like those raised in the lecture lead to an understanding of the value of Psychology at the present time. “I understand that the role of Psychology is one of transformation, of care, and this moment we live in is extremely delicate because it weakens the subject, leaving him exposed. The moment the state neglects, it socially unprotects people. When we see a service like the SUS being limited, being privatized, as were some service sectors, it is time for Psychology to put its hands on care and turn its attention to these more social issues”. According to the student, "care and attention need to be social, they must be comprehensive, as the SUS proposes to be."

The coordinator of the Psychology course, Sylvia Barreto, explains that the inaugural class of the course, historically, discusses a theme that will be transversal in the semester. "The theme was chosen precisely because we are living in a very intense and very difficult way all these transformations that will directly impact health policies and this affects the performance of the health professional, the user's life, and the psychology student needs to have more and more spaces for discussion to reflect on our role as a social transformer.”
