Students from Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública exercised the practice of community health in a course aimed at pregnant women. At the event, held from May 22 to 26, medical students gave free lectures to pregnant women and their companions on topics related to pregnancy, such as signs of childbirth, breastfeeding, the puerperal period, care for the newborn (such as the technique of shantala), bond between parents and babies and guidelines for a healthy pregnancy. The course took place at the Academic Unit Brotas.

In the assessment of the coordinator of the course for pregnant women and professor of the Medicine course at Bahiana, Maria Cristina Gomes, the program of this event has been improved every year, with the effective participation of students. “The course is a complement, since doubts cannot be completely resolved during prenatal care,” he said. For her, this is a chance for pregnant women to delve into the topic.

In five years of activity – held every semester – this course completes the cycle of assistance to pregnant women, since many of them are assisted by students from the Bahiana during prenatal care, says student Gabriela Mascarenhas, a student of the 3rd semester of the Medicine course.

Class assistant Andrea Soares found out about the course at the Teaching-Assistential Outpatient Clinic of Bahiana (ADAB), where he performs prenatal care. “I participated from the first day of the program and I loved it, as I had the opportunity to clarify many doubts and learn about many issues that I didn't know about in relation to baby care”, she says.

For Marina Costa, 6th semester student of the Medicine course at Bahiana and monitors the Women's Health curriculum component, this is an opportunity to gain access to daily practices and guide future fathers and mothers before the child is born. “For us, students, it is very important to resolve these doubts, especially for 'first-time' mothers. In the course, we have the opportunity to deal with the public and highlight the importance of prenatal exams, which are essential for a healthy pregnancy”.

The former civil construction employee Juci Bispo endorses the student's speech. “I'm in my third pregnancy and the course is wonderful for dealing with varied subjects. Even though I was no longer a 'first-time sailor', I still had doubts”.

On that occasion, the course had the participation of professors from Bahiana and IPERBA professionals, the obstetrician Dr. David Nunes, who spoke a little about pregnancy and Zika virus, and the neonatologist Dr. Ana Paz, who spoke about the importance of donating human milk.
