May 15 - Mucopolysaccharidosis Awareness "D" Day

Data marks the cause of people with so-called ?rare diseases?.

May 15th is “D” Awareness Day for Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS), a subgroup of genetic metabolic diseases caused by enzyme deficiencies that block the degradation of mucopolysaccharides. Also known as “rare diseases”, they are aggravated by the difficulty of diagnosis and treatment.

In Bahia, access to structured health services and social inclusion for people with MPS is a constant struggle of the Bahia Association of Friends of Mucopolysaccharidosis and Rare Diseases (ABAMPS).

Created in 2007, ABAMPS has a group of health professionals who, voluntarily, participate in actions that aim to help and meet the various demands of patients and families. The association also dedicates efforts to disseminate relevant information about rare diseases, which are still largely unknown by the population.

This Monday, the Bahiana opened space for public awareness with ABAMPS volunteers. The action included blood tests on children to identify rare diseases.
