Medical Intern Students from the 9th to the 12th semester of the Medicine course at Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública participated, on March 31, in the X Seminar on Medical Internship, which took place at the Cabula Academic Unit.

The event also brought together renowned professors and guests in the health area and featured panels focusing on ethical and legal issues, in addition to discussing new perspectives on the medical career.

The coordinator of the Choosing Wisely in Brazil campaign, Dr. Guilherme Barcellos, professor Luiz Augusto Vasconcellos, angiologist and CREMEB advisor; the Prof. Otávio Marambaia, otolaryngologist, member of Cremeb and professor of the Medicine course at Bahiana, in addition to Dr. Hermila Guedes, Dr. José Abelardo Meneses and Dr. Luis Cláudio Lemos Correia.

The coordinator of the Medicine course at Bahiana, Prof. Ana Verônica, highlights the relevance of the themes addressed at the meeting. "We brought discussions that involved questions about medical practice, how the doctor should proceed in filling out death certificates and medical records, questions about the media - what can be said by professionals, that is, medical responsibility, among others."

According to Prof. Dilton Mendonça, coordinator of the Medical Internship at Bahiana, the seminar “is an opportunity for the student to debate topics such as medical residency, the job market, dilemmas and ethical behavior”.

The X Seminar also featured a conference on the Choosing Wisely movement, whose campaign preaches a change in medical attitude, working on the real need to requisition exams and procedures in order to avoid waste in the health system. The campaign is an initiative of the ABIM Foundation and began in the United States, in 2012, soon after in Canada and today circulates in more than 20 countries. "THE Bahiana, as it is a pioneer institution in Brazil, it was the first medical school to deal with this campaign during graduation”, points out Prof. Dilton.

According to Luiz Augusto Vasconcellos, the topics discussed during the seminar were extremely relevant for the professional training of students. “It is essential to clarify for students how to fill out medical records, as this is an essential tool for consolidating patient information in the linearity of medical follow-up. We also talk about the death certificate as it is a very difficult and unavoidable topic throughout the profession”.

Venandra Andrade, 10th semester student of the Medicine course at Bahiana, reports that the seminar is a way to renew knowledge. “Although we have these approaches throughout our graduation, when we arrive at the internship, participating in a seminar discussing these themes ends up recycling our knowledge about medical practice”.

As for Leonora Camandaroba, a 9th semester student of the Medicine course, it is relevant to discuss themes that will guide the medical experience after graduation. “I think about doing endocrinology or obstetrical gynecology and having the opportunity to clarify doubts with professionals in the medical field is super important for my training”, he points out.
