"Psychology and social commitment” was the theme of the inaugural class of the Psychology course, held last Friday, February 3, at the Academic Unit Brotas da Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública.

The program brought together professors and academics with the aim of debating the role of psychologists and their role in society. During the activity, lectures were given by the course professors, Fábio Giorgio and Milena Lisboa, with the mediation of professor Isabella Queiroz.

The coordinator and professor of the Psychology course, Sylvia Barreto, explains that the topic was chosen due to the current reality of society and the world. “This meeting allows us to reflect on the role of the psychologist and the social commitment of psychology in view of what we are living and being called upon to position ourselves politically and ethically. The intention was for the students to have access to this information and to a more contextualized discussion on the subject”.

Fábio Giorgio reports that the idea of bringing up the topic was to “think a little about the arid and difficult time we are living in Brazil”. According to him, "there is nothing better than knowing the role of psychology and where it is committed for good and evil in this context."

Nina Martins, 2nd semester student of the Psychology course at Bahiana, comments that the inaugural class is important to guide students in the course proposal and on the psychologist's place in relation to the themes that are debated. “The reflection, study and debate are valid regarding our commitment and social role as students and future psychologists”.
