Professor of the Dentistry course at Bahiana is recognized as one of the top five dentists in the world by Turma do Bem

The professor of the Dentistry course at Bahiana, Leonardo Costa, was elected one of the best dentists in the world by the NGO Turma do Bem. The announcement was made on November 4, in Poços de Caldas (MG), during the organization of Sorriso do Bem, an annual training and planning event of the NGO.

On the occasion, the volunteers who stood out the most in the fight to guarantee the oral health of the population were also announced, with Osvaldo Magro Filho being elected the best dentist in the world by Turma do Bem. Bahiana, were also highlighted among the five best dentists Daiz Nunes (Macapá), Amando Piva (Barbacena) and Maria Cristina Silveira (Ubatuba).

The program had Empathy as its central theme and had the participation of 500 professionals and guests from different countries. Among the speakers were historian Leandro Karnal, writers Valter Hugo Mãe and Thalita Rebouças, physician Marco Antônio de Carvalho Filho (creator of a course on empathy for medical students at the State University of Campinas), among others. Sorriso do Bem 2016 was presented by OralB with the support of Morelli Orthodontia, Amil Linha Dental, Argo Seguros, Heraeus Kulzer, RCrio, SIN Implante and Surya Dental.

Dentists Elizabeth Magalhães, Leonardo Costa and Martha Colavolpe represented Salvador, which this year stood out as the 5th best city in the world within the NGO's actions.

Turma do Bem is considered one of the five largest social impact organizations on the planet. There are 16 thousand dentists who work in 14 countries and offer free dental care to the population in a socially vulnerable condition. Through the Dentista do Bem (Dentist for Good) program, the organization has provided, since 2002, free assistance to 68 thousand young people aged between 11 and 17, with low income and with serious oral problems.

The Apolônias do Bem program, supported by UN Women, has already provided comprehensive and free care to 750 women victims of violence. Created in 2012, in São Paulo, it was expanded to Rio de Janeiro in 2013 and, in 2014, to Espírito Santo. Last year, the program was extended to the entire country. This year, it was also offered to trans women.
