Following a movement to get closer to the Salvador community, the Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública received high school students from Colégio Anglo-Brasileiro, on October 25, at Cabula Academic Unit. The visit was a pilot action of the "A Escola na Escola" project, which intends to establish collaborative partnerships with public and private secondary education institutions that are interested in using the resources of the Bahiana to deepen knowledge, putting into practice subjects already taught in the classroom.

"Our idea is to strengthen ties with the community, establishing a relationship with students, not only those who are interested in health education, but all of them putting the Bahiana as a place of sociocultural development", declares the project's creator and coordinator of People Development, Prof. Luiza Ribeiro. She emphasizes that the Bahiana today it has a staff of more than 20 pedagogues, which demonstrates the institution's concern with encouraging the various ways of apprehending knowledge.

"With this initiative, the Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública it stands as a space for relationships between its teachers, its students and the teachers and students of secondary schools. Another important step of this project is to provide high school educators with a special moment, the possibility of offering their students a more dynamic, richer and more differentiated class", adds Luiza Ribeiro.

During the entire visit, the 25 3rd year students were accompanied by the coordinator of the Department of Natural Sciences and Biology professor, Alessandro Carvalho, and by professors Pablo Cabalero (Biology), Paulo Jorge (Physics), Roberto Bahiense (Physics) and Roque Araújo (Chemistry) from Colégio Anglo-Brasileiro. Also present were professor Luiza Ribeiro, manager and analyst of Institutional Relations, Fabiana Perin and Júlia Macedo, and professors of the Biomedicine course Suzana Araújo Vasconcelos, who coordinated the activities in the Morfofunctional laboratory, where the functioning of the nervous system was discussed. central, and Jaqueline Goes de Jesus, who was in charge of activities in the Chemical and Physical Sciences laboratory, as well as academic monitors from the Bahiana.

With Professor Jaqueline, the visitors participated in a class on the effects of osmolarity on the integrity of red blood cells. "By carrying out this activity, students were able to have contact, in practice, with theoretical content covered in the main exams in the country, such as the ENEM, for example. This experience is of great importance, as it consolidates learning", explains the professor of the Biomedicine course at Bahiana Jaqueline Goes de Jesus.

Pilot project

All the work to carry out the pilot project “A Escola na Escola” began in February 2016, when the coordinator of People Development at Bahiana visited Colégio Anglo-Brasileiro to start planning the activity." Now in September, the project took shape and then we made contact with teachers, monitors and coordinators of the laboratories of the Bahiana that would be used in classes. In this contact, we made all the programming with the division of classes and organization of schedules. The idea was that Anglo students could have "real classes", using the spaces offered by the Bahiana and supervised by their professors", explains the coordinator of the Department of Natural Sciences and professor of Biology at Anglo-Brasileiro, Alessandro Carvalho.

He explains that the selection of contents was based on the subjects that are worked on in high school that are charged in the ENEM and in the entrance exam of Bahiana. "At this point, I must highlight the excellent work done by the teachers and monitors who helped us. They managed to integrate well the topics covered with what my students had seen at school".

Among the objectives of the activity, Alessandro highlights the deepening of knowledge that was seen in the classroom, the rich experience of taking a class at a college, the integration between school and college, "stimulating students to seek knowledge and not to settle down and that the boys could make an assessment of how prepared they were to start their selective exams".

For student Maria Eduarda Bicalho, the visit was the best of the various field activities she has participated in at the school. “I really felt part of what was happening, I felt that I was using the knowledge I already had and that we were creating knowledge too. We learned a lot!”.

Alessandro says that the students' response to the project was extremely positive "The project was fantastic! The staff at Bahiana he was very attentive and dedicated and our students shone, showing a lot of knowledge, logical reasoning and the ability to make connections between the various topics that were discussed. All students, even those who are not taking entrance exams for the health area, came back very excited about the classes they had taken".
