December 1st is World AIDS Day. Despite advances in research for prevention, treatment and cure, the World Health Organization warns of the imminent risk of a new global epidemic.

Thirty-five years after the onset of the disease, countries in Eastern Europe, North Africa, the Caribbean, Central Asia and the Middle East have again shown an increase in the number of HIV records among adults.

How to prevent

- Use condoms in any type of sexual relationship (vaginal, anal or oral).

- Only use disposable or sterilized sharp materials (blades, razors, pliers). In dental offices, tattoo and beauty studios or acupuncture clinics, demand and ensure the sterilization or replacement of materials.

- Blood transfusions and organ transplants must be performed with healthy donors and out of risk groups. Blood and blood products must be properly tested.

- All pregnant women must take the test that identifies the presence of the HIV virus. If the test is positive, the pregnant woman will receive adequate treatment to prevent transmission to the child during delivery. It will also be necessary to replace the breast milk with artificial milk or with human milk processed in milk banks, which provide counseling and screening of donors.
