On October 20, the Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública hosted the lecture "The Function of the Symptom”, in the Academic Unit Brotas. The activity was a preparation for the I Journey of Psychoanalysis and Medicine that will take place in 2017, in addition to providing a dialogue between the two areas, discussing clinical, epistemic and political issues.

The event counted on the participation of students and professionals of medicine and psychology and had as guest speaker the psychoanalyst Gustavo Stiglitz, member of the School of Lacanian Orientation of Buenos Aires and of the World Association of Psychoanalysis. “It is very important to bring discussions like this one, because both medicine and psychoanalysis work with the patient in different ways and perspectives and it is important to find a dialogue between these two areas”.

The event coordinator and professor of Integrated Clinic I and II in the area of Mental Semiology of the Medicine course at Bahiana, Célia Salles, explains that the event is an initiative of the Research Center in Psychoanalysis and Medicine, the result of a partnership between the Bahiana and the Brazilian School of Psychoanalysis/BA, through the Institute of Psychoanalysis of Bahia. “Bringing this lecture today provided a discussion between what psychoanalysis can contribute and what can be heard in the area of medicine, carrying out this work of dialogue”.

The psychoanalyst Rogério Barros reports that the program allowed for the integration of medicine and psychoanalysis professionals, in order to promote a dialogue. “The group's proposal is precisely to show how psychoanalysis can benefit from medical knowledge and vice versa. The idea of bringing a psychoanalyst and a doctor to address the topic is precisely to show, with greater precision, how it is possible to mediate a dialogue between the two areas”.

Marta Baltazar, professor of the Medicine course at Bahiana, says that it is important to interact with knowledge. "Medicine treats the symptom in a deficient way and psychoanalysis treats it as something that the person produces so that he can somehow find himself in the world, therefore, different perspectives on the same situation only enrich the work of professionals" .
