On October 14th, the I Meeting of Organizational and Work Psychology, at the Cabula Academic Unit of Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública.

The program was proposed by a group of professors from the Psychology course represented by professors Eliana Edington, Myla Arouca, Carolina Aguiar, Marcia Tirone, Sylvia Barreto and Carmem Barbosa and brought together professors, psychologists and students from Bahiana and from other institutions. The objective was to broaden the discussions on organizational and work psychology, as well as the possibilities of professional performance in these areas.

The coordinator of the psychology course, professor Sylvia Barreto, explains that the idea of the activity is to open new spaces where possibilities of action for those interested in working with people are discussed. She points out that the course of Bahiana it has an emphasis on occupational health, an emphasis that is inserted in some curricular components in the internship and also in the organizational area, at Hospital Humberto Castro Lima.

In addition, there is a specific stage in the field of work and organizations. "So, we meet with this proposal to open this space for discussions annually," stated the coordinator.

It is necessary to popularize

The guest of the event, the psychologist and doctor in collective health Carlos Linhares de Albuquerque explains that it is necessary to spread the emphasis on organizational psychology, as this is an area in expansion.

“Bahiana, with the name of School of Medicine and Public Health, reinforces the idea that the place of psychology is always close to formal health teams. However, psychology has also been developing in the work, organizational and business environments, where we have a series of challenges that require the presence of the psychologist.”

He reiterates that the role of the psychologist is precisely to fight power relations that generate some kind of suffering and a feeling of injustice. Organizational psychology will always work in this direction, that it is necessary to create, in the company, a place where health is part of all good listening practices, ergonomics, quality of life, anti-stress policies.

“Psychology also invites us to study. The human resources department, for example, is a place that provides training courses. If a company were a country, HR would be the Ministry of Education, Health, Justice and a few other things”, explains the psychologist.

According to the psychology professor Eliana Edington, one of the course's emphases is organizational and work psychology, which are not widely recognized externally. One of the objectives of this meeting, she emphasizes, is precisely to be able to better disseminate this data, showing the institution's competence in the area, including presenting cases of former students already in the job market.

"The idea was to do an activity that allowed us to present a little bit of organizational psychology and work that can also be in a more playful, light and fun way and not just that stereotyped view of the assembly line of people working without joy, without a smile" , complements the teacher.

For Claudia Menezes, student of the 9th semester of the Psychology course at Faculdade Maurício de Nassau, it is always good to have activities in Salvador for students and also to update professionals already working in the area. "It's an interactive way of meeting other people, making new connections."

Amanda Nogueira, 6th semester student of the Psychology course at Bahiana, emphasizes that the event complements what is seen in the course. “The way we look at organizational psychology in the course is more serious, so we look at processes with a theoretical basis. Here we have a more practical notion, of fluidity”.
