"Art in physiotherapy: in teaching, assessment and treatment" was the theme of the special program promoted by Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública in honor of Physiotherapist Day, held on October 13, at the Cabula Academic Unit.

Students, teachers, former students and physiotherapists were present at the event, which opened with a presentation of the ballet corps of the Teatro Castro Alves Ballet.

For the coordinator of the Physiotherapy course, professor Luciana Bilitário, promoting an event that brings together art and teaching, in the evaluation and in physiotherapy treatment is extremely valid because the profession has a strong connection with the artistic part.

The coordinator said that many dancers and dancers seek physiotherapy as a profession. In conversation with students from Bahiana who also study dance and with teachers trained in ballet and dance, she questioned what attracted them to physical therapy. "The answer was precisely that they saw a lot of art in the study of the function of human movement."

During the event, lectures were given on art in therapeutic assessment, by the honored professor, Ana Lúcia Góes, and also on art in the teaching of morphofunctional physiotherapy, by professors Moema Pires and Giovanna Bergheme. Professor Lisely Silva spoke about art in physical therapy treatment.

The art of physiotherapy

For Ana Lúcia Góes, the Physiotherapist's Day is a time to reinforce the profession's identity and to inform students and the public about the importance of physiotherapy in people's lives.

Including art in the event, according to the honoree of the day, was important to establish a counterpoint and balance in the academic sphere, bringing sensitivity to the look at taking care of the other.

“It is an opportunity to emphasize that physiotherapy works at all levels of care, not just rehabilitation, but care, a differentiated look and quality of movement”, said Ana Lúcia Góes, and concluded: “We help and facilitate the process of giving back a quality of life for the patient”.

art and health

The People Development Coordinator at Bahiana, Luiza Ribeiro, emphasizes that the event is another action of the institution within an awareness policy. She also highlights the partnership between TCA Ballet and Escola, established this year. “It is obvious that physiotherapy dialogues with ballet, dance and the body, but, above all, the choice of the theme “art” in physiotherapy is very sensitive because the profession is really also an art”.

For Luiza Ribeiro, it is “incredible to see the improvement in people's quality of life when they propose to undergo physical therapy treatment”.

The dancer and artistic advisor of the TCA Ballet, Dina Tourinho, mother of Maria Tourinho, student of the 4th semester of the Physiotherapy course at Bahiana, says it is a great pleasure to establish this partnership with the institution. Being present at the event and having her daughter in the audience was gratifying.

“I have 25 years of ballet and Maria's choice to do physiotherapy was of her own free will. She is very interested in how the physiotherapist can treat a patient who has a neuromotor problem”, says Dina.

She believes that the fact that Maria has her father in this area as well – Gilberto Bahia is a dancer at TCA – contributed to this contact with art. “This helped to develop sensitivity, looking at the other, care and perception. I think that in art is very strong”.

Maria says that her parents even suggested that she study dance, but she found, in physiotherapy, a course that was related to dance and the body. She didn't think she would enjoy the course so much. “Over time, I discovered the importance of physiotherapy for movements and ended up choosing a course that has to do with art”.

Other partnerships

In celebration of Physiotherapist's Day, the Bahiana, in partnership with other institutions, also presented the project on anatomy and art, coordinated by Karina Oliveira, professor of Nursing at Bahiana, physiotherapist and professor of General Anatomy at the State University of Bahia (UNEB).

During the activities, courses were raffled and the closing featured a presentation by the Dança Fisio group Bahiana.

The event was supported by the Rehabilitation and Aesthetics Clinic (Fisicom), Integrar Saúde, Instituto São Paulo Saúde ISP - Saúde and SMA Equipamentos em Physiotherapy.
