“Learning with disabilities: inclusive actions in higher education” was the theme of the roundtable held on September 22, at the Academic Unit Brotas, from Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública.

The event is an initiative of the Psychopedagogical Care Center (NAPP) and brought together students from Bahiana, Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), State University of Bahia (UNEB) and Unijorge with the aim of exchanging inclusive experiences developed in the academic reality of higher education institutions.

The panel included the doctoral student in Education from UFBA, Amanda Botelho, the master in Medicine and Human Health from Bahiana, Prof. Ana Lucia Goés, PhD in Education at Uneb, Prof. Jaciete Santos and the Physiotherapy student at Bahiana, Filipe Laranjeira.

The psychopedagogist of the NAPP, Jozélia Abreu, explains that the Bahiana, since the foundation of the nucleus, promotes the inclusion of students with disabilities, whether it is a mental disorder or a learning disability. "The Inclusion and Diversity Program Bahiana it aims to accompany people with any type of disability and aims to discuss the issue of diversity. This first step was to raise awareness and we invited the community both from our academic environment and from other institutions to participate in the actions that we have already developed within the institution”.

According to the People Development coordinator at Bahiana, Prof. Luiza Ribeiro, the Bahiana has been engaged in the inclusion process for many years. "THE Bahiana not only promotes the inclusion of disability, but also includes it in the context of courses, and we were the first institution that implemented Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy, about 40 years ago, and more recently, Biomedicine, so institutionally we are a school of inclusion and public health”.

Physically disabled, the student of the 7th semester of the Physiotherapy course at Bahiana, Filipe Laranjeira reports that the institution provides full mobility for the physically handicapped, demonstrating its concern with the insertion of these people in the academic environment. “When I arrived here I found another reality related to Physiotherapy in the teaching environment, as the professors encouraged me a lot, making my vision expanded. Being present at this event today is important to encourage people with any type of disability to enroll in a university”.
