Class "The history of cardiovascular medicine in the eyes of a researcher"

Share

A Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública received, on the morning of September 15, visiting professor João Lima, director of the cardiovascular imaging department at Johns Hopkins Hospital (USA). During his visit, he taught the class "The History of Cardiovascular Medicine from a Researcher's View" to undergraduate medical students.

The activity was an initiative of the graduate program of the Bahiana with the support of the Institutional Academic Relations and Internationalization Nucleus of Bahiana (REAII) and integrates the schedule of the Agenda Bahiana Global.

The manager of REAII, Maria Antonieta Araújo, the dean of research and innovation, Prof. Atson Fernandes, professors of the Medicine course and the postgraduate program Luís Cláudio Correia, Ana Marice Ladeia, Marcus Almeida and Bernardo Galvão, also coordinator of the HTLV Center of the health service at Bahiana. The class ended with a roundtable with professors who debated the theme of research and cardiovascular medicine with the students.

Antônio Maurício dos Santos Cerqueira, a 6th-year medical student, points out that the class was an opportunity for the undergraduate student to have contact with a broader view of medicine. "We usually hope to be in graduate school to start having contact with this experience and with researchers like the one who came here today. So, we were able to have a broader debate about evidence-based medicine, research and even a career in medicine . It was a pioneering event and one that should continue to happen".

After the class, the teachers participated in a meeting with the dean of Bahiana, Prof. Dr. Maria Luisa Carvalho Soliani, who welcomed the guest professor and with whom he discussed the possibility of expanding the partnership between the two institutions, this time also covering graduation. Professor João Lima says that, in the scope of postgraduate studies, Bahiana and Johns Hopkins Hospital already conduct research with tangible results.

In partnership with Bahiana, he served as a CNPq scholarship holder in the research project “Association between the Urbanization Process and the Presence of Subclinical Cardiovascular Disease in Traditional Indigenous Populations of the São Francisco River Basin: Effects of Dams and São Francisco Transposition”.

About the contact with undergraduate students during the given class, João Lima draws attention to the high level of preparation of the academics. "They asked exactly about issues that are on the 'wave crest' in medicine and biomedicine, from the ethical, socioeconomic and scientific point of view. This shows that youth engaged in a higher education course like medicine and in a school like Bahiana knows exactly what the big issues are at the moment."

Global Agenda Bahiana

The agenda Bahiana Global was established in November 2015 and already takes place every two months. "We seek to bring people with relevant work in some of the areas of our courses to a conference where there is the possibility for both students and professors to get to know different contexts. The agenda has a transcultural proposal that is to bring to the Bahiana knowledge and work practices and science of other cultures", reports Maria Antonieta Araújo.
