Last August 20th, students from Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública and the Academic League of Exercise Medicine and Sports of Bahia (LAMEEB), formed by students from the Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Bahia (FMB/UFBA), participated in the Basic Life Support Course, helping employees of the Division of Base of Esporte Clube Vitória, at Manuel Barradas Stadium (Barradão).

The Basic Life Support Course is an initiative of the club's medical department and was carried out by the Center for Teaching and Research in First Aid (NEPPS), composed of students from Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública, under the guidance of Professor André Zimmermann.

The Academic League of Exercise Medicine and Sports of Bahia (LAMEEB), formed by students from the Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Bahia (FMB/UFBA) and supervised by Professor Luis Schiper was also responsible for the course.
The schedule guided and trained employees to provide the first emergency care until the arrival of a specialized medical team, in addition to addressing cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers and the procedure for using the automatic external defibrillator.

"It is important to point out that no clinical situation surpasses the priority of care for cardiopulmonary arrest, in which the speed and effectiveness of the interventions adopted are crucial for a better result of the care", observes Henrique Guimarães, eighth semester student of the Medicine course at Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) and an intern at the club's medical department and one of the organizers of the action.

Annually, approximately 8 million people worldwide experience respiratory cardiac arrest (PCR). About 70% of CPAs occur outside the hospital, with more than 50% affecting people under 65 years of age. "These numbers show the importance of addressing the issue. This was an excellent initiative by the club. Basic life support is a subject that everyone should know or have an idea about, as they are simple behaviors that can save lives", stresses the student Mariana Tarquinio, 4th semester of the Medicine course at Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública and one of the guiding activities.

In the coming weeks, the course will be given to the technical committees of the youth and professional football categories. "We are already available to address, in addition to cardiorespiratory arrest, issues such as limb immobilization, bleeding containment and clinical emergencies, such as fainting", informs Mariana Tarquinio, who adds: "the receptivity of the participants shows the need and importance of the work we do. With each new experience, we feel more prepared, because teaching is a constant practice."

After the course, Vitória employees invited the entire team to visit some of the club's facilities. At Vitória, medical interns Caio Franco, Igor Chagas, Leandro Cavalcanti and Rafael Baleeiro also participate in the organization of the activity, supervised by doctors Carlos Martan, Nathália Figueirêdo and Gabriel Leal.
