“The inaugural class is part of our academic calendar and this semester we chose the theme 'Diversity in Research in Psychology', precisely because we are advancing in the organization of our research groups. We understand that we have the entire faculty involved in these groups and it is important to discuss with students where we speak as psychologists, as researchers in psychology, because there are various forms and methods of research and, increasingly, psychology is being called upon to integrate interdisciplinary teams and we need to continue this discussion, on how we can place ourselves in these spaces”, declared Sylvia Barreto, coordinator of the Psychology course, welcoming new students at Bahiana during the inaugural class of the course, which took place last Friday, July 22, at the Academic Unit Brotas da Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública.

The program brought together academics and professors from the Psychology course with lectures by psychologists Ana Rita Ferraz and Isabela Queiroz.

Psychologist Isabela Queiroz explains that the idea of the inaugural class is to invite students to think a little and reflect on the practice of psychology.

“We thought, in this opening of the semester, to show two different ways of dealing with written research and with the practice of research in terms of the psychologist's place. So, what is it like to deal with an excluded population, doomed to oblivion, death and how to think about care for this population, aiming at articulating this subject with their space and reality, and the issue of abandonment, which is a striking factor in life of these people, thinking of how we psychologists could promote comprehensive health to this subject", reports the professor of the Psychology course at Bahiana , Isabella Queiroz.

“In fact, Isabela and I brought to the opening class lectures with different perspectives on research methods, different writing conceptions and I think this is relevant for any space in the academy because, above all, the academic place is made, it takes place in the more concrete forms from writing. We need, at all times, to think about what this writing is, who I write for and how I write myself in the text”, concludes psychologist Ana Rita Ferraz.

For the freshman, Artur José, the inaugural class contributed a lot to his understanding, especially in terms of writing. “I really enjoyed it and debating how to write was very interesting, as I have a blog and I have the intention of being a writer one day when I finish college. So, the lecture helped me a lot to put subjectivity in my texts”, he concludes.
