"My mother and sister graduated from Bahiana, therefore, I have great references from the institution. I hope to find a very humanistic education based on looking at the patient as a holistic being", says Lorena Paraiso, 19, a freshman in the Medicine course who attended Novos da Bahiana 2016.2, which, this semester, presented the theme Solidarity Relations, Individual Action and Collective Transformation, on July 15th, at the Academic Unit Cabula da Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública.

The event, which marked the reception of new academics from the Bahiana, had the participation of special guests, such as the managing partner of Véli Soluções in HR, Margot Azevedo, one of the promoters of the project to train athletes in the communities of Flamengo and Araras, in Sertão da Bahia, which is coordinated by Antônio Ferreira Bonfim (Ferreirinha), main speaker of the morning. The freshmen were welcomed by the coordinator of People Development, Luiza Ribeiro, and the moment gained its artistic tone with the musical presentation of psychologists from the Psychopedagogical Care Center (NAPP), Débora Ferraz and Gustavo Vilas Boas.

On the occasion, the Novos da Bahiana they could also receive a welcome from the coordinators of the courses of Medicine (Dr. Ana Verônica Mascarenhas Batista), Biomedicine (Prof. Geraldo Argolo), Physical Education (Prof. Clárcson Plácido), Physiotherapy (Prof. Luciana Bilitário), Dentistry ( Prof. Urbino Tunes), Psychology (Prof. Sylvia Barreto), Nursing (Prof. Luciana Bilitário, representing the coordination), in addition to the entire NAPP team.

According to the coordinator of the NAPP, Angélica Mendes, one of the most important aspects of the mission of the Bahiana is the focus on social responsibility. “We understand that to present this from the beginning to the freshman is to strengthen this institution's mission and bring this student who enters higher education, in a health institution, to think about health collectively, not in an individual way”, he explains.

During the program, physical educator Ferreirinha presented a lecture about his initiative to set up an athletics school in the villages of Flamengo and Araras, in the interior of Bahia, also reporting the experience of taking the Olympic torch relay at the Rio 2016 and Rio Olympics participation in the Caldeirão do Huck program.

"First, it is a very big responsibility to be here talking to freshmen about the work I do with my students and I try to raise their awareness through the main tools I use, which are affection, love, the desire to see them in good conditions. to get out of the life they lead with difficulties. The most important thing I think is that the Bahiana it's giving us a great opportunity to be a link between the underprivileged and those with great opportunities. I'm very happy, it's the second time I've been invited and I'd like to thank the institution for having given me the task of making this day emblematic and memorable for the freshmen”, he concludes.

"It is an unusual moment for all of us who are behind the scenes of the institution, as we renew this cycle in relation to the arrival of new students, new expectations, as the charges increase with each semester in which we receive new ones from the Bahiana”, explains the coordinator of the Physical Education course, Clarcson Plácido.

For zootechnician Liliana Santos, mother of freshman Leticia Almeida, 18, from the Medicine course, it is a great joy to have a daughter joining the Bahiana, as it is a renowned institution in Bahia. “She had already passed the 1st round twice and failed to pass the second. My father and sister are doctors and, since she was a little girl, she has wanted to study medicine. Her future, for sure, will be bright, as the institution is extremely committed to the students and to their education”, she says.

“I expect many good things from the School and I chose Psychology because I identify a lot with the course. The receptivity and attention of the faculty is impressive and this is a differential that the Bahiana there is, because, in other faculties, sometimes we don't have this approach with the professors”, says Raquel Vila Nova, 20, a freshman in the Psychology course.
