Last Saturday, June 11, at the Academic Unit Brotas, Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública hosted the Simpozika event, held by Bioexpertise.

The program brought together students, professors and health professionals from the Bahiana and other institutions with the objective of discussing Zika virus, an aggravating issue in health that still brings many doubts and questions to the population.

“We brought this theme to our first symposium because of the global relevance that the virus has and, in addition, it is a benefit event for the Embrace Microcephaly Project, in which all food donations will be donated to support these families that are part of the project”, reports the director of Bioexpertise and professor of Biomedicine at Bahiana, Mabel Proence.

Throughout the program, the lectures "Introduction to Zika virus" were given by the Biomedicine professors at Bahiana and Bioexpertise members Fernanda Cury and Luciane Amorim, “History of Zika virus in Brazil” by Prof. Rubio Soares, pharmacist at the Federal University of Bahia, “Epidemiology of Zika virus in Bahia” by professor, physiotherapist and member of the Ethics and Research Committee of SESAB, Nadja Queiroz, and “Pathogenesis of Zika virus infection in neural stem cells” by Dr. Bruno Solano, doctoral candidate in the postgraduate program in experimental pathology at UFBA.

"Activities like these are extremely important for the training of young students who are starting a career, emphasizing the importance of research and the study of science in the lives of these future health professionals, in addition to disseminating the work on Zika virus to the population ”, reports Prof. Rúbio Soares.

According to Professor Fernanda Cury, a member of Bioexpertise, the main objective of the symposium was to bring some knowledge to academics and health professionals. "We believe that knowledge is the main tool in combating Zika virus infection and the purpose of this event is precisely a chat with experts in the field, clarifying the participants' doubts, as we believe they can act as multipliers of this knowledge to others people,” he explains.

"Because it is such a broad subject and every day there is an update in terms of publication and investigation of the virus, it is important for us to disseminate this knowledge through events like these, because many of these subjects do not reach the population, so it is It is important for us to discuss what is most current in the area, since it is a topic of worldwide interest”, reports the professor of Biomedicine, Luciane Amorim.

The student of the Biomedicine course at the Catholic University, Bárbara dos Santos, explains that activities like these are important not only for the education of students, but also for the clarification of the virus with health professionals. “I came with many doubts and found the lectures and information that until now I had no knowledge about Zika virology as valid,” he points out.

“The schedule was fantastic for dealing with such an up-to-date and valid subject for our area of expertise. The lectures were given by professionals who master the theme and, through them, I was able to clarify a series of doubts”, concludes Luiza Alves, a student of the 3rd semester of the Medicine course at Bahiana.
