“For two years, we have been doing this activity at the end of each semester and we present to the public the work carried out with patients from the groups of the Mental Health and Elderly Health Programs of the Occupational Therapy Service and now we are introducing a discussion with them. on solidarity economy and income generation, which is also a strategy for us to work on the independence and autonomy of patients”, explains the coordinator of the Occupational Therapy Service (SERTO) of the Teaching-Assistance Outpatient Clinic of the Bahiana (ADAB), Sofia Campos, about the exhibition “A little bit of each” which took place on June 1st, at the Academic Unit Brotas da Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública.

The main objective of the work developed in the elderly groups is focused on promoting health and socialization of patients and, in turn, the Mental Health Program group has a therapeutic character, in order to develop in patients suffering from mental disorders , questions through expressive activities.

The money acquired from the sale of the work done by the patients is partially reverted to the purchase of new materials. The destination of the rest collected is decided by the group participants.

“Our work is focused on health promotion. We gather the elderly and look at the issue of autonomy and what each one is capable of producing, valuing these skills. We started with a group for exchanging skills - an elderly person who knew how to do a certain job brought it to the group, teaching the other members, and then the idea of exhibiting these pieces came up and we now have 20 elderly people", explains Ana Cláudia Braga, specialist in Elderly Health and responsible for the group.

According to retired Darci Araújo, 70, a patient from the Elderly Health Program, the activities in the group are essential for their daily lives, as the work developed allows for greater integration with other members, in addition to promoting mental hygiene. “We developed handcrafted work that provides a great deal of learning, an exchange of experiences, as each one brings different ideas and, based on that, we build very interesting things”, he explains.

“Joining the Health for the Elderly group has greatly improved my daily life, because, through the activities, I have the opportunity to share our life stories, not only doing good to our minds but also to our bodies, which are always in motion”, concludes Lucia Maria Barreto, 74 years old, pensioner.
