Release: Manual of Procedures in Infectious and Parasitic Diseases

Important personalities of the medical community were gathered on the evening of May 31st, in the foyer of the Library of the Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública from the Academic Unit, Campus Cabula, where they witnessed the launch of the 4th edition of Manual of Procedures in Infectious and Parasitic Diseases of the Couto Maia Hospital, publication organized by the doctor and professor of Bahiana, Dr. Ceuci Nunes, by the coordinator of the Medicine course, Dr. Ana Verônica Mascarenhas Batista and by the physician Edilson Sacramento. The Dean of the Bahiana, Dr. Maria Luisa Carvalho Soliani, the Health Secretary of the State of Bahia, Fábio Vilas-Boas, the president of the Academy of Medicine of Bahia, Dr. Almério de Souza Machado, the CREMEB advisor, Dr. Círia Santana, representing the Association Bahiana of Medicine, Dr. Jorge Jambeiro, the director of SindMédicos, Dr. Deoclides Cardoso Oliveira and Sandra Regina Soares, editor of Eduneb, responsible for the publication.

The book is the result of the partnership between the Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública, the Health Department of the State of Bahia-SESAB/Hospital Couto Maio and the Publisher of the State University of Bahia. According to Dr. Edilson Sacramento, "this book had its first edition in 1994, organized by Dr. José Tavares Neto. It had the initial intention of being a manual for doctors to base themselves on and have a clinical approach within the hospital. But it was growing and today has articles that reach 20 and 30 pages".

According to Dr. Ceuci Nunes, current director of the Hospital Couto Maia, the launch of the work also marks the anniversary of the institution, which this year, in April, completed 163 years of foundation. "Today is a very important day. We are celebrating here a work of many hands, there are 46 chapters written by 56 authors, of which 90% are hospital doctors", commented the doctor in her speech.

"It is a pleasure to welcome all of you here to our home for the launch of this much-anticipated and long-awaited book. Bahiana was sought out to be a partner in this project, we soon became partners. The Hospital Couto Maia is also our home, as it welcomes our students who have learning experiences in an environment that values the human aspect. So, we have here, today, a book that is very important and precious, and being able to participate in this is an honor for Bahiana", declared Dr. Maria Luisa Carvalho Soliani.

The work contemplates the medium and high complexities required for patients with infectious and parasitic diseases, transmitted by human contact or by vectors. It will also serve as a reference guide for medical schools in their basic teaching for learning the infectious and parasitic diseases that occur in our environment.

In addition to important changes in protocols, especially for tuberculosis and dengue, the book includes chapters on new pathologies such as chikungunya and Guillian Barré syndrome.
