“To conclude the semester with a golden key, we brought up an aggravating theme which is the congenital Zika syndrome, a disease that, recently, its relationship with the Aedes aegypti mosquito was discovered and that has been frightening the entire Brazilian and South American population. ”, explains the professor of the Biomedicine course, Sidney Santana, coordinator of Science with Acarajé, whose 15th edition took place on May 19, at the Academic Unit Cabula da Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública.

The program brought together professors and students of Biomedicine courses through the Tutorial Education Program (PET) of the Bahiana and students from other faculties with the aim of instructing them on the subject. During the program, a lecture was given by Dr. Manoel Alfredo Curvelo Sarno, master and doctor in Gynecology from Unicamp and coordinator of the obstetrics internship at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), who discussed the scope of the virus in the world, cases of microcephaly and its possible causes, among other issues related to the Zika virus.

“It's important for people to be aware of the problem and turn despair and paranoia into real, tangible facts that we can fight. We have been making this alert and reassuring ourselves a little because the cases of Zika infection and microcephaly have been decreasing”, explains Dr. Manoel Alfredo Curvelo Sarno.

According to the member of PET Biomedicina, a student of the 3rd semester of the Biomedicine course at Bahiana, the choice of the theme was in commemoration of the 15th edition of Ciência com Acarajé, as it is an important theme to be debated. “We brought this lecture on Zika by inviting a master who masters the subject to clarify possible doubts and keep us informed about a virus that is considered a threat to global health,” he explains.

At the end of the program, BioExpertise was presented, a training, science and health group composed of teachers trained by  Bahiana with the objective of promoting training courses and spreading knowledge on social networks.

"We will launch courses in partnership with the Bahiana as theoretical, practical and training courses. To start them, we will start with a symposium on Zika “SimpoZika”, on June 11th”, reports the Prof. of the Biomedicine course at Bahiana, Fernanda Khouri.
