I TOCE Monitoring Symposium I

Share

Last Saturday, April 16, professionals and medical students from Bahiana and other educational institutions filled Auditorium 1, of the Cabula Academic Unit, where they participated in the I Symposium on ESWN Monitoring I: Updates in Clinical Emergencies, whose lecture was given by the professor at the University of São Paulo (USP), Dr. Herlon Saraiva Martins, author of the book “Clinical Emergencies – Practical Approach”, a national reference in the subject, in the most diverse tests in the country.

The event was an initiative of the graduate student of the 10th semester of Medicine, Gabriel Neimann, who met the speaker in a course on clinical emergencies that he held at USP. "We have the monitoring of Operative and Surgical Technique I (TOCE I), a subject in which, at the moment, I am the monitoring coordinator. Last year I took the national course on clinical emergencies at USP, which is coordinated by Professor Herlon. an invitation for him to teach this symposium here and he readily accepted. It's the first time he's been here to lecture. We think of emergency as the main theme, as it's a subject we see more at the end of the course. After I took the course in São Paulo , I realized that it would be interesting to bring him because he is the author of the book that brings new updates every year", declared the student.

"I think this event is very important, which brings a speaker who is a reference in Brazil. The theme is very important in our curriculum, as we need to be well prepared for the HGE, in the emergency part. We have the SAMU and the pre-HGE, but the emergency matter we see diluted in other things", explains Jessica Suerdik, 9th semester med student at Bahiana.

Dr. Herlon Saraiva Martins praised the initiative of the student Gabriel Neimann and the Bahiana in offering a space to develop the study of emergency. "This is an extremely important work, because it is a very difficult area, which has a lot of neglect, and an event like this, with 300 people, is a way to raise awareness that it is an important topic and put into focus what is a need of society . I just have to congratulate Gabriel and the Bahiana, because this is an important event for our society".

According to the doctor, specialization in emergency was only recognized in Brazil last year, unlike what occurs in the United States and in European countries. "I was fighting for emergency recognition as a medical specialty for 13 years. On September 16, 2015, the specialty was recognized in Brazil and we are going to start the residency program, which will last for three years. The expectation is that, in the next few years, 10, 20 years, we can evolve. We are almost 40 years behind in relation to the United States and European countries, and now we will have to evolve. In these countries, the professional is more trained than in other specialties. In England, the government does not let the doctor go to the emergency if he has not completed six years of training, for example."

Speaker: Dr. Herlon Saraiva Martins

Co-founder and member of the Brazilian Association of Emergency Medicine (ABRAMEDE), doctor in medical sciences in the area of Concentration in Medical Emergencies by USP and International Member of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), European Society for Emergency Medicine (EuSEM) and World Interactive Network Focused On Critical UltraSound (WINFOCUS). Dr. Herlon will be responsible for reviewing some of the most important topics and their updates in the field of clinical emergencies.
