Recently, Dr. Rogério Grimaldi, professor of Medicine at Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública launched the book “Susceptibility and Resistance to HIV Infection”.

In the book, a comparative analysis was performed between the prevalence of some polymorphisms in genes related to HIV infection in three different ethnic groups in Brazil and in a cohort of HIV-1 infected individuals.

According to the studies, the alleles analyzed did not occur at similar frequencies in the Brazilian ethnic groups studied and the allele frequencies observed were not statistically different when compared to HIV-1 infected and non-infected individuals.

“This study was a pioneer in Brazil and, therefore, of great importance to obtain a better understanding of the genetics of the Brazilian population, as well as the influence of different polymorphisms in host genes in the progression to AIDS”, explains professor Rogério.
