International workshop is held at Bahiana

Event promoted by NEPA addressed the current applications of Nuclear Medicine in Gastroenterology.

On January 18, the International Workshop was held with the participation of Prof. Stefano Fanti (Bologna – Italy) addressing the current applications of Nuclear Medicine in Gastroenterology, in the auditorium of the Academic Unit Brotas.

The event was promoted by the Center for Teaching and Research in Anatomy (NEPA) and organized by Dr. Rinaldo Barros (NEPA teaching coordinator) and academics Leonardo Pereira, Lucas Mendes and Rodrigo Pato (NEPA student supervisors). The event was held in partnership with Hospital São Rafael (HSR) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), having as organizers Dr. Lucas Vieira (coordinator of the Nuclear and Molecular Medicine Service of the HSR) and Dr. Victor Mascarenhas (coordinator of the Department of Neurophysiology of the HSR).

During the program, 110 participants belonging to the Center for Teaching and Research in Anatomy (NEPA) were gathered; Center for Teaching and Research in Radiological Anatomy (NEPAR); Radiology and Applied Imaging Anatomy League (LAR); turns on Bahiana of Clinical Surgery (LBCC); Academic League of Clinical Anatomy (LAAC); Academic League of Oncology (LAO); Academic League of Digestive System Surgery (LACAD); League of Gastroenterology and Hepatology (LAGH); Academic League of General Medicine (LAMEG); Study Group on Digestive Tract Surgery (GECAD) in addition to interns from the Bahiana. 

Also present were Dr. Carolina Freitas Lins, Fernando Fernandes, postgraduate students of the Master of Health Technologies at Bahiana, Dr. Cláudia Heine Filha and Dr. Jodson Rego, resident physicians at the General Surgery Service of the Clériston Andrade General Hospital and the 3rd semester student of Medicine at Bahiana, Pedro Filgueiras, responsible for simultaneous translation (Italian-Portuguese). 

During the conference, Professor Dr. Stefano Fanti spoke about the indications of PET-CT in gastric neoplasms, colon neoplasms, GIST and neuroendocrine tumors in relation to diagnosis, staging, relapse screening and therapeutic evaluation of chemo/radio therapies.

“The workshop represented yet another activity that NEPA carried out in partnership with the Extension Coordination of the Bahiana allowing the dissemination of knowledge among medical students in Salvador, contributing to the constant improvement of medical education”, said Professor Rinaldo Barros.

According to him, the activity promoted by NEPA materialized the participation in a worldwide project aimed at increasing the integration between specialists and medical schools in relation to the dissemination of the proper use of nuclear medicine, including allowing an increase in the availability of that technology to patients in the System Health Service (SUS).
